PC3200 Memory No Workee??

#1 Post by treker » Tue Jan 24, 2006 9:06 pm

I just got a new T42 2379RHU 1.8Mhz 512mb 14in XGA. I had a new stick of OCZ Ultra High Performance 512mb PC3200 SODIMM around and wanted to install it. Now the T42 just beeps a few times and never POSTs. Removed the "bad" and booted up. What gives? Why shouldn't PC3200 work? It's faster than the stock PC2700. Is this another case where IBM locks out any kind of different stuff? Does it HAVE to be 2700 to work?

Just wondering why you bought PC3200 when it won't benefit you in a T4x series?

Had it laying around...actually, friend left it. Wasn't for the T42.

So, PC3200 doesn't work in T42???

Honestly don't know, but if it would "work" the memory controller would simply run it at PC2700 speeds.

Does the memory work if it is the only stick installed? If so, it sounds like you have a mismatch problem (most likely causes by the different sticks having different CAS timings).

No, PC3200 is fine. PC3200 is usually cheaper than PC2700 nowadays too. AFAIK, they're not timed aggressively either, so you should be fine w/ CAS 3. Try another stick. It simply might be "not compatible".

Most memory modules have several timing table to align with the other dimm(s) allready installed. This pc3200 memory probably does not have a value to alling with the allready installed module.

I popped in a PQI "No Name" PC2700 512 stick and it is working just fine. I have no idea why this OCZ stick did not work.
