issues with powering on T42

#1 Post by bongi » Wed Jan 25, 2006 4:38 am

My T42 has been acting a little dodgy for the last week and decided to officially call it quits today, so I'm wondering if anything can be done about it.

Last week it refused to wake up out of standby mode, so I just switched it off using the power button. Then when I went to restart it, the LEDs lit up - power status and battery indicator - and the fan kicked in, but the screen remained completely blank and the hard drive wasn't running. This was the case regardless of whether I tried to boot up from my (charged) 6-cell battery or from the AC adapter. Later, I put in my 9-cell battery and miraculously it booted up with no problems. I could even switch back to the 6-cell battery or the AC adapter and all was well.

The same thing continued to happen intermittently through the week with no discernable pattern as to why, and I quickly remedied the situation each time with the battery swap. But as of today, the battery swap technique no longer works - I even tried swapping in a battery from a friend's T42 - and my computer remains dark.

Any ideas about what is going on with this T42?

try this:
detach all the power suplier(battery, AC), and then press the power button for 10 or 20 sec, after doing that put the machine together and power up the system.

maybe this will solve your problem, and maybe it won't.

but someone i know had done that before, and succeeded.

hope you have a good luck :)

Unlucky me. :( I had tried the power button trick after reading about it in another post here and it didn't work.

Maybe my question now needs to be about how to access my warranty to get this fixed. You see, I live in Tanzania but bought the computer in the US before I moved here. The closest IBM service center is in Kenya. Does anyone have any experience or tips on how to work with IBM while traveling/living abroad to get a computer fixed?

Thanks!

You should have world-wide coverage...HOWEVER...if the laptop was going to go to another country on a permanent basis, then you are to inform IBM of this BEFORE you leave the US!
