T4x LCD replacement issue

#1 Post by alexr » Wed Jan 25, 2006 5:57 pm

Couple of months ago LCD on my notebook was accidentally cracked and I decided to replace it myself - did not look hard at all. Unexpectedly I encountered difficulties in finding a replacement LCD. The whole story is too long and I'm going only give you short version of the story.

My system is T41 2373-9FU and the cracked LCD was 14.1" 11P8348 - Samsung LTN141P4-L02. I checked information on IBM site and they had two LCDs for my model: 11P8348/Samsung (which I had) and 11P8346/IdTech.

First I tried non-IBM LCDs (though I were told they were compatible) IdTech IASX16C (I do not quite remember but it was either for Compaq or Dell system) and LTN141P4-L01 (for Dell). None worked. The notebook either constantly rebooted or automatically powered down few seconds after I powered it up.

Then I found 11P8346. When I received it turned out the manufacturer
model of the screen was IdTech IASX16C (the same as I tried before). Of course, it did not work again though (what a surprise) it worked perfectly on Dell system. The biggest problem with this screen is that the seller does not want to take it back.

I was really surprised and disappointed that the screen IBM recommended for my system did not work and started to dig up a little more. After a little research I found that everything points to the fact that 11P8348 is Samsung LTN141P4-L02 (know it for sure) and 11P8346 is IdTech IASX16S. One person also confirmed (and I already suspected) that:

IBM is very special it only takes IASX16S or LTN141P4-L02 not other screen with minor version difference will work (!!!)
(Does not it look similar to the problems with non-IBM HD and wireless cards?)

And now I have a LCD that according to the seller is 11P8346 and according to IBM must work on my system. But it does not! So either the seller or IBM hmm... do not provide correct information. Though it is very unlikely that IBM used the same FRU# for (slightly?) different LCD models (IASX16C and IASX16S) I do not have strong enough proof of that.

That was the short version of the story and now questions I want to ask:

- Did anyone try to use non-IBM LCDs (anything besides IASX16S and LTN141P4-L02)? Did it work?

- Will/should 11P8346/IdTech IASX16S LCD work on my system? Did anyone replace Samsung LCD with IdTech or vice verse?

- Can anybody also confirm that 11P8346 is IdTech IASX16S ONLY and nothing also?

Thanks

According to this document, the FRU you have for the IDTech Panel is correct and only ID Tech and Samsung made the 14.1" SXGA+ panels for the T40-42.

Not sure what other options you have.

I don't know if this will help anybody, but on a related note; I have a T42 15" that came with the ID Tech SXGA+ FlexView screen. I didn't care for some aspects of the screen and replaced the panel itself (leaving the inverter and everything else in place) with a Samsung LTN150PG 15" SXGA+ panel. The Samsung isn't mentioned anywhere in any IBM docs I can find, nor do I believe it shipped in any of these models. It works flawlessly.

@Alexr,

Did you solved this problem?
I have similar issues on a T40p with cracked screen and exactly the same partnumbers.

Please let me know what the final result was.

Thanks, Msmax

Hi Alexr and MSMax,

You mentioned that your original LCD, this maybe a stupid question but I believe should not be overlooked but did you try to confirm if your inverter or LCD cable was not affected by the LCD accident?

Thanks for the tip, but the LCD cable is OK.

I tried another TFT on the notebook after I bought the unit an brought it home: Samsung LTN141P2-L01.
Is it possible that this has damaged the motherboard?

The original was from IDTech. The replacement from Samsung is the LTN141P4-L02, also used by IBM as FRU P/N 11P8348 ijn deze notebooks.

Anyone knows where to find datasheets for these 2 screens?
Then I can compare some data and see if it is possible to damage the MB by exchanging these 2.

I have bought now a LTN141P2-L02 screen. Will arrive within a few days. Hopefully the notebook will boot and be OK, if not... looking for a T40p motherboard.

Or may be the GPU is on a seperate PCB and just clicked in connectors to the motherboard.

If any other idea's, please tell me.

Thanks, Msmax

@MsMax
I know this thread is a bit old. But I've just encountered the same problem and I hope you may have some comments with it.

I have just purchased an ID Tech's 118436 to replace my Samsung 118438. The Samsung's back light is dead and I broke its plastic frame while I was trying to replace the CCFL. But when I connect the new panel and turn on the power, the panel stays blank and the laptop reboots again and again.

The mother board and inverter should be OK for I can still see something with my old Samsung panel.

Thanks!

My T42 2373-3UU has a bad ccfl on it's iriginal 11P8348. I was able to find an 11P8346, which didn't work even though the HMM said it would. Second try was a Samsung LTN141P2-L02, which should have been compatible with the 11P8348. Neither one worked.

Right now I am looking at trying to find an 11P8348 or replacing the CCFL in my old 11P8348.

FWIW, I had exactly the same symptoms. I just hope I can replace the ccfl without breaking anything!

Note that DELL in its wisdom makes a CUSTOM version of some samsung panels, and they ONLY work with DELL computers, so stay away from EBay auctions that say something like, "Dell LTN141P4-L02", because it will work with no other computers.

Here are the 3 possible screens for your laptop.

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/TFT_display

LTN141P4-L02 Samsung
IASX16S ID Tech
HT14P12-100 Boe-Hydis (_NOT_ an IPS display)

The 3rd one is not listed on the thinkwiki.org website, but it's the screen I got with my T42 (ATI 9600) in 2006, and it's the screen I threw away when my son jumped on it in 2007, and it's the screen that I (sadly) replaced with the dimmer, pinker, Samsung LTN141P4-L02 about a month later. On paper the samsung has slightly better contrast, but in practice, the Boe-Hydis display is the one that is preferred for SXGA+ 14.1 T42's, T43's, and T60's.

http://www.panelook.com/B141PN01%20V1_A ... w_514.html

When IBM Started selling T42's in 2006 with the Boe-Hydis display, there was a flurry of discussion about them on this website. Even though it's not an IPS display, it's nicer than the Samsung displays.
=======================
Lots of thinkpads (10+) but I would never be so stupid as to list them all because that would spam everybody's searches and people who *do* try to list them all would be jerks.
