Great! Multiple T42 Adapters

#1 Post by Leon » Fri Jul 16, 2004 1:43 pm

I always keep an adapter everywhere I might plug in (including my car, and one in my case)...but when I bought my T42, they became "bricks" cause you can't use the old ones (also, staying charged up makes your expensive battery last longer)... anyway, I needed 5. I found this great deal on T42 compatable ones (I checked with IBM Support), for only $16. The people are very nice, and they will combine/reduce shipping for multiple items. I got 3 more, and they are perfect! (They also have other IBM items).

Yes, I use my 4 year old T20 adapter on my T42p.
Same voltage, same ratings.
T20's is a little bit bigger just because it has extra "tabs" at the ends to help wrap the cord. So I like the T20's just a little better (like 2% better) when travelling.. but it's no big deal.

Do you have any idea if the port replicator they sell will work with the T42p? Thanks!

Port replicator compatility

#6 Post by cjsuh » Fri Jul 16, 2004 6:37 pm

Synapse: I just got off the phone with IBM and the Port Replicator available through this ebay vendor is NOT compatible with T42 ThinkPads. Look at this link for compatibility lists:

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... IGR-4NXNTP

Basically, the one we need is the "Port Replicator II".

They're good people, as I've posted in the past.

But if you want the best deal on a power brick, buy the Port Replicator they're offering for $11.99.

It COMES with a 72W brick! I've bought several of them as have many others from the Thinkpad mail list.

But the port replicator doesn't actually work with the T42's, right? Or did IBM give me mis-information (it wouldn't be the first time)?

No, it doesn't, but who cares? If you have an earlier T/A/X series machine the PR will work with, use it. If not, throw it away or sell it on eBay for $10!

Good call. I just wish they had a T42-compatible port replicator available. Seems like it would be pretty convenient, but not enough to justify its retail price...

The ad doesn't say it comes with a power brick, only a power cable and from the picture, it looks like you plug the cord from the brick into the back of the port replicator.

So what's the deal? Does the "cable" mentioned actually include the power brick as well, or is the brick somehow fitted as an included module into the port replicator?

Thanks

EDIT: Nevermind, I'm blind. It says plain as day, "Power Supply Included".

ebay Power Supply

#16 Post by First Light » Thu Jul 22, 2004 1:43 pm

I ordered and just received one of the AC Adapter/power supply's that comes with the Port Replicator from the ebay site. The AC power supply plug utilizes a 2-prong AC power plug in rather than a 3-plug grounded plug. Are there any issues with using a 2-prong ungrounded power supply vs a 3-prong grounded power supply, with a T42p?

My T42 came with a two-prong adapter plug.

actually, I have some that WERE 3 prong, and I break them off so I never get stuck if all I can find is a 2 prong outlet....
