There's SATA/PATA (Serial / Parallel), T42 has PATA.
You can also use your new harddrive in the Ultrabay slot istead of the DVD/CD-RW drive. If you want an exact image of your 40GB drive i think the easiest would be an external HDD enclosure for USB and http://www.drive-image.com/ or similar software. You can also burn the images to CD-R , but would take a lot of patience...

T42 and new harddrive
A T42 can use most drives available on the market today.
There is not an issue with PATA-SATA bridge.
However you have to be certain its a PATA drive - besides from that your only concern should be capacity.
A drivebay for the Ultrabay slim will be very handy, and might show usefull in the future, because you can your old drive for backup and other purposes.
I have no experience with driveimage and Thinkpads. Ghost should work though. Other claim Acronis as good utillity too.

PATA is the new name for IDE (also referred to as EIDE, ATA, ATAPI) drives. Bottom line, you don't need SATA.
Ghost works well and will copy your IBM hidden partition. Look for other posts about Ghost for more details on this.

There are a lot of threads in this forum on this subject. Search for "IBM second hard drive adapter" if you want to learn about using this method. The IBM second hard drive adapter comes bundled with easy to use cloning software for a total price of about $50 or less if you can get EPP pricing.
Search for "Acronis True Image" if you want to learn about this back up/cloning software which is generally highly regarded and somewhat easier to use than Ghost.

IBM Second Hard Drive Adaper
Hi there,
I bought an IBM Second Hard Drive Adapter with my new Thinkpad, and I was just thinking about putting an 80Gb or 100GB drive in there as an additional data drive, not as a clone.
I was looking for a thread on this, but I do not seem to be able to find the right thread. Could you please point me towards a couple of good threads on this, also concerning what drives you would recommend to put into the Laptop.

I would really appreciate your response to this.
Have a nice Sunday,
Scanvest
P.S. I also seem to have misplaced the Cloning Software that came on a floppy with the adapter. Is there somewhere I could download that?

Scanvest - Note that HDD take a lot of power out of the battery, and also produce noise. If you use two HDDs note that it will have that effect. So if you go unpluged, it would help your battery time to remove one of the HDDs.
mack30 -In general, WD is not recommended.
