New harddisk not working
New harddisk not working
Hi all,
I have buyed a new Hardisk, 80 Gb 7200 rpm, 8Mb cache and so on.
The exact model is:
Hitachi Travelstar HTS721080G9AT00
My Thinkpad is an R51 1829-9MG
BIOS 3.19
Emb. controller: 3.04
The disk doesn't work. The hardisk activity light remains on and the disk isn't recognized. (In UltraBay doesn't work too!)
What I find strange is that i own another 80 gb Hitachi Disk 60 gb 7200 rpm (exact model number is: HTS726060M9AT00) that simply works fine, without problems.
Have I bought an unsupported disk?
Is there a solution?
Best regards and thank you

I have tried this procedure but without success.
The disk is recognized in the external USB adapter...
I have created a partition using gparted under Gnome...

Disk problems with R Series machines
You may have the same problem that I have. I have an R52, about 6 months old, and I cannot get it to boot any genuine IBM disk other than the one that it came with. I'm convinced its an issue with the firmware associated with the harddrive but I cannot get any sense out of IBM/Lenovo on this - they don't seem to want to communicate with me. There is a set of web pages on the Lenovo site giving details of a disk firmware upgrade and when I try it I am told that I need to do the upgrade but then it fails with a big red box. There is also something funny about the firmware level on one of my disks because it is not mentioned in the list of available firmwares even though all the disks were acquired through IBM. I have tried 4 disks and all fail the same way. They are all recognised when attached through the USB port or in the Ultrabay, but none of them will boot despite having working Windows operating systems on them.
Is there someone that has a list of supported disks models and firmwares for the R51?
Is maybe a downgrade of my BIOS usefull?
Just for info: I have tried formatting the disk either from Linux using gParted than from windows using the disk manager. As third test I have tried to start a Debian install with the disk in the USB adapter (disk is recognized) and later stoppping the installation (after disk changes are made...) but without success.
I need a 7200 rpm >60gb disk drive.... what now?
Thank you, best regards

Disk Problems and R Series Machines
This URL seems to give the list of supported harddisks - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 08#changes - You will almost certainly find your disk on this list if you bought it from IBM. All my disks are on the list but if the upgrade fails, as mine did, you cannot make any progress and so far I've had no luck with Lenovo. I even wrote an email to the chap who wrote the software but I didn't get any reply at all, and the email did not bounce, so I have no reason to believe he did not recieve it - I know IBM systems respond to unknown emails. Like you I just don't know what I can do to make any other disk bootable from either an R50e or an R52 - it seems like Lenovo is doing something to them (or the Thinkpads) that prevent booting from anything other than the supplied disk. This may be yet another antic of the anti-piracy lobby ala Sony.
Problems with hard disks for R Series Machines
Just as a matter of interest could you post the id of the disk that you have got to work - I'm curious - the one that I would desperately like to boot from is HTS726060M9AT00 - its a 60GB 7200 rpm with an IBM part number of 13N6799, although it has a sticker on it which says ASM P/N 13N6806, FRU P/N 13N6807 and booted fine in a T41p.
Can you boot to a diskette with the drive in the primary hdd spot in the thinkpad?
If so, re-partition and fdisk/mbr the hard drive. Then format and load it there. Don't try to format / partition in a USB caddy or anything else external, or connected to a desktop, or anywhree else but in the primary hdd bay of the thinkpad.

If you want to throw more money at the problem, you can try the ST910021A from Seagate. I have an R52 (1849-4WU), and it works for me just fine. No annoying beeps at start up.
I found out about it here: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_w ... hard_disks

Interesting, though; so that means the R52 has the same PATA-SATA brdige that the T43 has? If it does, why isn't there some sort of 2010 Error associated with it?
Regardless, though...It should work in the Ultrabay. I have a Hitachi 60GB drive that causes a 2010 Error to be thrown on boot whilst in the primary; but works fine when booting from the Ultrabay. I am going to take a guess and say they changed the hardware slightly on the system boards for the T43 and the R52 in this case. The only problem I have, besides "Why?" in the first place, is why do some seem to have problems with one disk while another boots just fine with the same model disk.

I don't know if I should laugh or cry...
I have now buyed an Hitachi 60 Gb 7200 rpm (as the one working, just to be sure that I can have a working backup-disk...) but dated as AUG-04 and... doesn't work!
What does than change? Firmware? Can I downgrade it?
The full P/N of the working one:
08K0939H695570P45
the P/N of the NOT working one:
08K0939H695570P48
I have loved IBM Thinkpads, but sure, when I change the laptop NO MORE IBM or Lenovo... this isn't the manner to do things and keep customers...
[EDIT]
I have bought a Seagate Harddisk (80 Gb, 7200 rpm, ...) and DOESN?T WORK too!!!
The exact model is:
Seagate
Momentus 7200.108K0939H695570P45
80 Gb
Model: ST980825A
PN: 9S3733 - 500
FW: 3.04
Date: 06232
Site: AMK
... I think that now is cheaper buying a non-IBM Laptop... (Maybe using the money from selling the many Hd I have...
)

The T43 and R52 have the same PATA-SATA bridge and the same 2010 error. I guess only people who buy the more expensive T series would be inclined to upgrade their drives, and run into the 2010 error first. By the time the R users feel like upgrading, the forums are full of T owners and their 2010 posts, plus the R52 came much later, and the newer BIOS with the 2010 fix was released soon after.christopher_wolf wrote:Interesting, though; so that means the R52 has the same PATA-SATA brdige that the T43 has? Your drives should work else Lenove or IBM is making themselves open for a class action lawsuit. That being said, one wonders why it isnt working.
1 You mentioned using linux to partition. Are you installing Linux? I assume you just want XP or whatever came with the system???
2. Best way to set up a new drive is to clone the old one. I have got a couple of A20m and G40. Take out the old drive, use an adapter and use acronis true image to store an image on your desktop. Then swap drives and put the image on the bigger drive. You should end up with the same volume serial number. In case of doubt, check the volume serial number before and make sure you got the same one when putting the new drive back in. Here is a tool to check and/or change VSN http://tinyurl.com/larw6
Xp may want to reactivate if you changed the VSN and there are not enough yes votes to keep activation.
you might want to check to see if you got a hibernate file and delete it, maybe that is the problem??

non-ibm hard disk
i didn't get whether or not your disk is actually bought from ibm. i'm guessing it wasn't.
if it isn't, try this: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... are+update
that'll flash the firmware to make the laptop "think" it is from ibm.

Problem Solved
Well I eventually solved the problem described by myself earlier in this thread. It only took me nearly 2 years. As a result of some more problems with my system I again took a long look at the Lenovo site and I came across the Lenovo page http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62282 I guess I didn't see this page back in 2005 because it first came out the day after I made my first post on this forum - sometimes you are just plain unlucky! Anyway this fixed my particular problem perfectly.
