Noisy!

#1 Post by vliou » Fri Jan 27, 2006 10:41 am

Hello,

So I upgraded my HDD to a Samsung 80GB HDD yesterday...

I find it really noisy...am I the ONLY person who thinks this? Would Seagate be better?

Hmm, I just put a 60gb Samsung 5400 rpm hard drive in my wife's T23 and it is dead quiet. What do you mean by "noisy"? Whirring sound? lots of clicking from accesses, or what?

Yeah, it's the whirring sound...

The reason I mention it is that my thinkpad is DEAD quiet now (with the fan control utility). So the only thing I hear is the HDD noise. I'm wondering if the Hitachi hard drives are quieter?

HDD noise

A general rule in several test will claim Seagate and Fujitsu to be the most silent.

Hitachi is in its 7200 rpm model considered noisy.

This is true to the best of my knowledge, with Western Digital and Samsung falling in the middle of the pack for noise. FWIW, I just put a 60gb WD 5400 rpm in my friend's R40 thinkpad and it's pretty quiet.

Sometimes, it's worth taking the drive out, making sure the caddy and front plate is attached correctly and the screws are tight, then remounting it.
