Rubber cover

I have a rubber cover that is flush with the plastic on the front edge of the screen between the latches. Its about 1/4" high and 2" long. What is it for?

It hides electrical connections.

That is the "Ultraport". Basically it's a USB port for IBM accesories such as a Web Cam, Bluetooth module, Digital Array Microphone and a Compact Flash reader.

I just popped mine off and looked. Cool, I never saw any accesories for this. A webcam would be very nice.

IBM, ahead of thier time again...

Yeah the webcams are pretty low res. VGA (640x480) I think. Not modern by any means.
