UPD: Which way to go...T30 or T40 to replace i1200? Decided!
I'm looking to replace an i1200 (1161-71U) that's on its way out after a... clumsy moment back on Friday the 13th (optical drive flatlined, lid hinges cracked and looking sketchy).
With the help of my tax refund, I can pretty definitely afford a Certified Used T30. I can probably pull together just enough to swing a T40, though it'll mean scraping by on pocket change for a couple weeks until my next paycheck.
So, here I turn for advice and opinions. What have you got?

Welcome to the Thinkpad Forums
Well, I guess my first question would be "What do you plan on using it for?"
In terms of a replacement to that i Series Thinkpad, both the T30 and the T40 pull some quite impressive performance.

i would recommend the T40. The extra $$ is definitely worth it.
Bettery battery runtime, cooler cpu (P-M vs P4-M), thinner and much lighter.

Having owned two T30's and T4X's I can agree with the statement above ONLY if you are going to take your laptop "places" on a regular basis. If you are going to keep it on a desk 90% percent of the time, then the T30 should be sufficient and you can save some $$$.

Well, I placed my order on Friday and got the invoice today from IBM, with notification that it should ship within 24 hours. I settled on a Certified Used T40p (2373-G1U) - 1.6Ghz/512/40GB/SXGA+/FireGL 9000/DVD-CDRW Combo/GbEther/WiFi/BT - "slightly imperfect" for $799.
That's less than half what I paid for the i1200 five and a half years ago!
Thanks for the input!
[UPDATE: As of 8:47PM EST, it's in the hands of UPS and scheduled for delivery on 2/16]

Just adding onto this some more; the i Series machines were built, under licence from IBM, by Acer; so there are some pretty interesting differences when you compare them to other Thinkpads just a little ahead of the i Series.draco2527 wrote:FYI:
The i series was a terrible machine compared to all the other offerings that IBM had, if you go with the T30 or T4X; you are going to realize how nice these machines really are.

haha, I know exacty how you feel. My refurbed T40 is on it's way from uBid right now. Expected delivery 2/16 as well.
I've been watching the tracking information.
They have a good deal going. The auction restarts when it ends, because they have a good bit of stock.

If it's wrong of me to check the tracking page at UPS.com every hour and a half to see how much closer it's gotten... I don't wanna be right!renderful wrote:haha, I know exacty how you feel.
