I ordered a Hitachi 7K100 7200 80G drive this morning. Will return or sell the Seagate, unless the Hitachi is as vibration-inclined as my 7K60 was.

I decided to try the acoustic management option in NHC (notebook hardware control) and set it to quiet instead of 'loud'. The noise level is noticable when I change it to be 'quiet'. I can't tell if the speed is reduced since I've only tried it for little bit.

It definitely helps if you're picky about the seeking/access noises since it cuts it down by half.
X22 - 800mhz - 640MB RAM - 60GB Hitachi 7200rpm 7k100
X40 - 1.4ghz - 1.5GB RAM - 8GB Transcend 300x CF on Addonics CF/IDE Adapter
T42p - 1.8ghz - 15" UXGA - 1GB RAM - 160GB HDD
X61t - C2D 1.6ghz - 12.1" SXGA+ - 8GB RAM - Intel G3 300GB SSD

i ordered the 7K100 80G hitachi and returned the Seagate 5400 60G. Too slow. Where is this NHC thingie you're talking about? Comes with the Hitachi? I won't get the drive until Thursday but would like to be ahead of the game.

NHC is supposed to gather hardware information from the laptop and control some settings. It can get temperatures and control cpu and fan speeds. For the X22, it can only detect temperatures and set some minor hardware settings such as cpu speed and harddrive acoustic settings.

It does not come as part of any IBM software package, you have to download it separately.

i just got a tp t23, and i've never had a laptop before, let alone a tp.
my question is....is it normal for the hard drive to make a constant whirring sound? from reading this thread it seems that it depends....

if it's possible to fix this,
could anybody recommend a cheap (less than $80)
hard drive that has at least 20gb of storage?

thanks guys in advanced....

Older drives have that whirring sound (such as my old inspiron A300cpi), and drives that are about to "give up". But I'd imagine any drive you'll buy today will be much more quiet then the one you have today. I'd recommend Samsung or Seagate (I only have seagate on my desktop).

For $80 or less you can at least get a 5400RPM Samsung Spinpoint or equivalent. If you want the BOMB try to squeeze up $120 or so and get a 7200RPM Hitachi 7K100 60G. I paid $150 for the 80G version and it's VERY vast, reasonably quiet and not nearly as vibration-prone as the previous generation of Hitachis.

Edited to chg approx price of Hitachi 7K100 60G
