Waterfield vs Sumdex Impactguard?

#1 Post by Jmmmmm » Mon Jan 30, 2006 4:06 am

I know this topic has been covered ten million times, but I've got it narrowed down to 2 sleeves and can't decide which one to get. I need a case to put my laptop in while it's in my unpadded messenger bag. While padding on the sides is needed, I'm especially concerned with the bottom (length) of the sleeve being well-padded, so the computer doesn't get damaged while I'm setting my bag on the ground. However, of course, I don't want the sleeve to be too big or too heavy, because the computer will have to share space with a number of books. I'm not going to carry it separately, and I don't need (or want, really) any extra pockets or features.

I'm mainly deciding between the waterfield and the Sumdex Impactguard (http://www.ebags.com/sumdex/impactguard ... elid=48887).

While I know the waterfield is highly recommended, and I'm sure it is tougher than the sumdex, the sumdex is much cheaper ($20, vs $60) and seems like it might offer equal or better protection for what I need it. I know everyone can chime in here with how great the waterfield is, but I'd really like to hear from someone who either:
1) Has seen/used/owned the Sumdex Impactguard
or
2) Someone who uses the Waterfield with an unpadded messenger bag.

Thanks

It's really hard to see how much protection the Sumdex sleeve provides, but it does look like a bigger sleeve (it seems to look like more a bag than a sleeve).

I myself have a Waterfield Sleevecase that I use in my backpack, and it provides decent protection for its size, but I believe it only provides enough protection for light drops (like I wouldn't throw or drop my backpack onto the ground). But then again you can't expect too much from a relatively thin layer of neoprene.

PS: The Waterfield Sleevecase IS a quality sleeve and although it is a bit expensive, it's worth it (think about how much you paid for your notebook - a small price to pay to keep it protected).

I have my doubts on Waterfield sleeve as they don't seem to have rigid protection. What I mean is that it doesn't look to have a shell protection.

Any user can confirm this or prove me wrong please? I'm also higly interested on those sleeve but that kept me holding...

I have a 14.1" Sumdex ImpactGuard for my T21 and I am very happy with it for what it is which is a sleeve. It fits the T21 very well. Check the internal dimensions on their website to see if it'll fit your laptop. It's a very slim, sleek, minimalist design. I use the sleeve with my unpadded Manhattan Portage messenger bag and I feel very confident with it.

I haven't used the Waterfield so I can't comment on that.
