Need I go looking for trouble with IBM updates??

I have a one month old T43, no problems at all (well, the creeping cursor, but I can live with it).

Is there any benefit for me to download any of the various updates on the Lenovo site? I have a build date of 12/15/05.

IMHO, if it's not broken there is no need to fix it.

I have been using very old but rock solid drivers from 2004 on a T42 till now.

I would get updates that are low level system upgrades, firmware, BIOS and EC updates, etc. The rest is at least somewhat optional.
