T40/41/42 system board
T40/41/42 system board
Are they the same? Somebody on ebay is selling IBM T40/1/2/2P System board w/ Security Chip - 91P7998. Just wondering if I could fit a T41 or T42 system board in my T40? Thanks!

Yes!
The older T41's came with the security chip embeded on the motherboard, the "newer" T41 and up motherboards have a removable security chip. The T40 never had the sock-sensor, so you will get the benefit of this!
The only draw back, if you try to install updates (bios) that relate to the T40; they will not work. (so you have to remember what model it came out of.
My T41 suffered a spill, I got a T42 motherboard; that is what I have on it now.
Again, it is possible on the T40; but you will have some issues (bios, etc)

I FORGOT TO MENTION----DO NOT buy a motherboard that has no security chip attached, if at one point there was one there; and it has been removed, the motherboard WILL NOT work!
If someone sells one from a working system and they pull the security chip out and they do not included; you are SOL! It will not work....

All of them { T40/T41/T42 and p versions } have the same bios file. But the internal chips vary, 41 and 42 can support DDR 333 where as 40 has only 266. Some in 42 have fingerprint support. You should not have any problems when you change the board due to bios or any of the hardware on it, as long as the board is a good functional one ( i.e no bad security chips etc.. )
