Why would you bother buying IBM branded RAM? They don't make those themselves, but just attach an IBM sticker on them.

True, but
1) memory is the most unlikely part to fail;
2) practically all memory comes with lifetime warranty; and
3) IF the memory module fails you're likely to be able to buy a new one after a year with the premium you pay for an IBM branded one :)

Well of course it says. But not because it's the best for your baby but because it's the best for IBM's shareholders :D

Crucial makes the best memory, IMHO. They give you free 2 day shipping if you order online. Lifetime guarantee on the memory. I've had nothing but great experiences with their customer support. www.crucial.com

Second for crucial.com - I bought 1 GB of RAM for my T40p and never had an issue - The cost was 1/3 of what IBM was charging.

One more vote

#12 Post by kengetz » Sat Jul 17, 2004 11:28 am

If it matters, count one more vote for http://www.crucial.com. I've really good luck with them. They also replaced a stick of memory several years after I bought it, at one point. Hard to argue... -- Ken

I used to do the same, but the ram you would get from http://www.crucial.com will be most exactly the same you will get from IBM. They warranty it to work without exception. It will cost maybe half what IBM charges and be the exact same in performance, etc.

You might want to check with Bill Morrow, he does get some good prices at times. If you want the official IBM RAM he might have it, too.

Kingston works great too. I got a 1GB for about $338, free shipping, back in Feb. The price went up quite a bit though, so Crucial is cheaper now.

I've actually read that some IBM branded memory still has the Crucial Technologies sticker on it.

Another vote for Crucial. The first thing I did when I ordered my T40 was order a 512MB SODIMM from them. Their memory is used by dozens of OEMs (Dell, Apple, etc) and their customer service is top-notch.

According to a program called SiSoft Sandra 2004, the ibm branded memory is actually made by Samsung. So if you were really that worried about it, find some samsung memory. My recommendation would be crucial.com though.

Which web site?
Crucial (crucial.com) price is OK, but Kingston (Kingston.com) isn't. With their 15% discount, 512MB RAM is about $140

I believe this is "valueRAM": Value-priced line of industry-standard, generic memory manufactured to a particular specification. Is this a real Kingston one?

I tried using Kingston ValueRAM on my girlfriend's X31, and it could not be detected.

Another vote for Crucial. For a little over a hundred bucks delivered, plus lifetime warranty, you can't go wrong.

It might if some new technology becomes widely available, e.g. DDR400 SODIMMs. But that's not going to happen because Intel is delaying everything now. I am not going to wait too long. Our FVU comes with 256MB and that's wimpy.
