Fan not kicking in in X30

#1 Post by alekseevs » Fri Feb 03, 2006 8:24 am

I have receintly purchased a used IBM X30. I love the machine (it is very light) but the fan does not seem to be kicking in. I have had the machine on for hours, but it never kicks in. However, it starts during the boot up, so it is not broken, but that's it. Is this normal? How often does your fan kick in on X30 or a similar model? Finally, is there any software I could use to check on its health or improve the performance? if it turns out to be dead - how critical is this for the processor (and the hard disk, maybe)? Am I running a high risk of the system dying down on me? Thanks a lot!!!

at 600mhz the fan of my X31 also never comes on.

Only if I run it at 1ghz / 1.4Ghz and load it for more than 30% for lets say 15 min it starts to run.

So try to run prime95 or an other 100% cpu becnhmark / testing tool.
And listen :P

Yup, the fan on the X40 next to me has yet to come since it booted up a few hours ago. My T43's fan was off until a minute ago. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

My X30 stays quiet too, only rarely the fan starts up. I run the adaptive scheme anyway even on AC power and that helps to keep the unneccessary heat down. Fan kicks audibly in usually at 65+ C temperatures which I rarely achieve, mostly when using the computer on my lap and playing some silly fullscreen flash game (guilty as charged). For all I know my fan could break down one day and it would take me weeks to notice it and proabably month to start missing it :)
