Dropped in two corsair pc2700 512mb cards in last night and what a difference! I never expected programs to run this smooth. Great upgrade for $100.

This is a good example of how cost-effective a good memory update is; I upgraded the memory to 1GB (might even go higher later on) up from 512MB and the system performance is excellent. :)

Ditto on the hard disk upgrade (to 7200 rpm 8 meg of cache) - you'll be very suprised by the difference it can make! :)

Thats why I bought a X31 :) Along with firewire connections.

Any recommondations on a 7200hdd? My last HDD was 30g and it took me 2 years to fill it so nothing big is required. I'd like to keep the price down but I don't mind spending more for quality.

Well.. those 40Gb (E)7K60's go cheap :)

I Have one installed (E7K60 40gb), tough it isnt as silent as my 7K60 60gb, since it doesnt have powermanagement.

I have just taken my X31 from 1Gb to 2Gb and I have to say I haven't noticed a particularly staggering difference! Still, I wanted to max the memory out regardless but for anyone contemplating a similar upgrade, I definitely think the 2 x 512Mb is the best bang for buck upgrade.

So the X31 does recognize 2GB? IBMs website has conflicting information and when I called they told me they "think it only can handel 512 in each slot" I will probably never upgrade my RAM again but I like to know I have options.

Absolutely. It's strange, I have also seen talk of whether the X31 supported 2Gb or not but MY understanding has always been that it does! I don't know of any sources that say otherwise. Anyway, I purchased 2 x Crucial 1Gb PC2700 sticks and here I am with 2Gb RAM.

But I do think the memory controller on the X31 limits the ram to pc2100 speeds anyway...
