Is this R40 a good deal?

#1 Post by wolfman » Sat Jul 17, 2004 12:43 pm

I can get the following system from IBM EPP - any opinions on this being a good deal? I'll be using the machine plugged in 95% of the time and am interesting in using the machine for application development (java, unix scripting, perl, visual studio). *Any* thoughts are appreciated:

Windows XP Pro
Pentium 4M 2.4 gigahertz processor 512kb L2 cache
256 meg of ram (which I'll upgrade to 1 gig)
40 gig 4200 RPM hard disk
15 inch 1024x768 display (I am OK with that resolution)
ATI Radeon 7500 graphics with 32 meg of ram (won't be gaming at all)
10/100 ethernet
DVD/CDRW Combo drive
56kb modem
ultranav
wireless upgradable (I have a cisco aironet 802.11b mini-pci to install)
3 year warranty included
free carrying case and shipping

$1199

Thanks!

R40 vs R51

#2 Post by tf123 » Thu Jul 22, 2004 7:52 pm

I was also looking at the EPP deal on the r40 2682pau for $1199, it has the best discount from the original list price but this product is over 1 1/2 years old and is using old list prices. Anyway I am considering the r51 1836bau IBM thinkpad express program product. This product is newer and has the following over the 2682pau: memory max 2 gig vs 1 gig, memory speed 333 mz vs 266, Intel Pentium M centrino technology vs Pentium 4, 1mb cache vs 512k, new ultra connect antenna for better reception, Installed intel pro 2200 b/g mini pc card (can't use in the 2682), CD Combo V vs Combo IV slower cdrw speed, Ultra ibm enhanced bay vs ultra plus. All these differences for $105 extra, total price $1304. Some of the disadvantages are: 1 yr warranty vs 3yr ($118), IBM extra promotions i/e lexmark printer and 128mb flashdrive not included with Express program machines. So these are the differences and there are trade offs. I don't have any other experiences with the products. Hope this helps your decision.
