Can I still buy T42 in August 2006?

#1 Post by spanichs » Sat Feb 04, 2006 8:09 am

I'll go to study Master's degree in the US in Aug. this year. As reading this forum for a while, I think I should buy T42 for several reasons. Is there still T42 for me to purchase in Aug.? I don't want to buy T43.

By August things might have changed very much. You may want to buy some of the new Core Duo stuff or maybe even Merom-based laptops then. With that said, T42 should still be available.

T42 vs T43

#4 Post by leegaard » Sat Feb 04, 2006 3:41 pm

T43
Pro.
533 mhz FSB

Con

Claimed to be more noisy than T42
Generating 2010 error with non-IBM disks (can be bypassed though)

T42

Pro

Accept almost every disk available on the market that fits the slot

Others may have to add or to contradict.. Feel free

I would add the Purported System Board Problem under the Cons of the T42.

Either way, both the Fan noise and System Board issues are only assumed issues and haven't ben proven as a fact on all the T43s and T42s shipping now and whether or not the pre-cursors to the problems will reliably manifest themselves on the aformentioned systems.

I know that we're now having a fan control utility. But it'd be good for me if I have more TP choices to choose when I'm in the US in Aug. I just want to know that there will be T42 left in a stock or whatever.

PS. I really don't like Z series, too. Its design is ugly!! :x

Yup, there will still be T42s in stock; I don't think they have plans for phasing them out anytime soon. :)

the one thing i disliked is that in t43 they used some sata to pata bridge / converter. i really don't like those.

get a T40 with 1.5G cpu, around august, if you can replace the CPU with 2.1 or 2.0G CpU, then you have a very fast laptop at a low price.

By august the total price for this option will be less than $1000.00

What's the system board problem with the T42?
Surfing on a T42 (2378RAU) - Dothan 1.6Ghz. 1024mb of Ram. 32mb ATI 7500. Intel 2200BG wifi card 100GB Seagate HDD

Also surfing on an X41 Tablet! - 1.5GHZ, 1GB of RAM, 60GB HDD, Bluetooth CDC, etc etc

There were several posts made here awhile ago (a search should pull them up) that stated certain T42s and T42ps were prone to system board failures, quite possibly due to mechanical stress and strain resulting in physical damage; it was also theorized that this was further exacerbated by carrying the T42 with one hand from the corner. My friend's T42 and others I have seen don't seem to suffer from this, but that is just what I noticed.

I try not to worry about the "What ifs" when getting a new system; the bad stuff has a low probability of happening, but the annoying yet so-called "minor" stuff (i.e. pixel errors, etc) are actually a part of the industry. If a problem arises later on, IBM/Lenovo should be able to fix it or give you a new Thinkpad. :)
