Resume Problems on T42??

#1 Post by msilano » Sat Feb 04, 2006 5:48 pm

Hi.

Recently after a number of updates (Cisco VPN 4.8, IBM PM, video drivers, etc), my T42 has started to behave a bit strangely.

Resume / Hibernate all work as expected - except when the computer is awakened. The system powers up and one can interact with it for about 15 seconds.

A device disconnect sound is then heard, and immediately after, the computer falls back into resume / hibernate, depending on what was originally selected.

The second time the computer is awakened, all is normal - except for a device connection sound.

I've tried all I know how to do on this; anyone have any ideas on how to proceed and troubleshoot this further?

Thanks,

Mike

Have you updated the BIOS?
It might help.
Try to do the same but this time without main battery with only ac/adapter connected. What happens?
Try to boot up in to BIOS with F1 after resume and se if it does the same. check device manager to see if something is missing or start in safe mode.
If possible swap hardrives with a collegue or friend or anybody with a similair machine, if your drive works in another machine it is not software related. should the fault follow the machine it is probably some hardware issue.

take care. cheers

Look at the 'Event Viewer' at the administrative tools. You will find there messages about abnormal event that have happend. If you carefully look at the messages there you could understand the cause of the problem.

Update

#4 Post by msilano » Sun Feb 05, 2006 8:12 am

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Here's some more detail as to what was done before throwing up my hands and asking for help.
  • BIOS was already updated to the latest released version.

All drivers were updated using the Thinkpad Software installer and a manual sweep of the device matrix.

    Upgraded to Cisco VPN 4.8

Using native Intel Wireless drivers (9.0.3.9) from Intel for the 2200BG WIFI card.

No events recorded in the event viewer.

Even tried the MS Windows Startup/Shutdown diagnostic tool (no longer actively supported) but that just died without leaving a log.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Were you using Intel 9.0.3.9 before or it was upgraded before problem occured?

I would try downgrading Cisco VPN or Intel Wireless Driver to see if it makes any difference. Cisco VPN 4.x uses a logical network adapter driver I believe.

I have been using Cisco VPN 3.63 and Intel 2200bg driver 8.1.0.28 on my T42 for over a year without any standby/resume issue. Of course, you don't need to try the ancient versions I am using.

I do believe I have the latest Intel 2200 BG driver from IBM/Lenovo, and it is version 9.0.2.31. You posted a newer version, so you must have gotten this driver from Intel or somewhere else. I don't know if this could cause your problem or not.

Intel PRO 2200bg and 2915abg Mini PCI adapter wireless software for Windows 2000, XP - ThinkPad R5*, T4*, X31, X32, X4*, Z60m

Try turning off Powerplay in the ATI display properties page and see if that makes any difference.

I've seen others post on this forum with the same problem, but I can't remember what the solution was. You can try some searches here.

Do a 'system restore' to previous date. It is under accesories - > system tools.
