*FIXED*why my T42 modem only connects at 28.8k??*FIXED*
How can i make it connect at a faster speed?? I can dial my isp with my other computer, and it always connects at 49.9kbps, which i guess is the fastest i can do because you can never really hit 56k.
*FIXED*
with a little digging around, you can find out that the manufacturer of the modem is CXT. Googling CXT, i found this inint string, and now the modem connects at 49kbps!!!
+ms=v90,,,,44000,52000
copy the init string exactly as it its, with the comas and everything, and paste it into the modem's Advanced tab. you can get there by going into Device Manager -->Modems-->IBM Integrated 56K Modem, and then click on the advanced tab, and paste the init string.

Does it always connects at exactly 28.8, or just around that number?
I would check first into the modem properties and so a query modem to look for anything unusual.
Then go the Modem tab and check the port maximun speed is set to the highest option.
Is the modem driver the latest?

I presume you that you also have also checked the Modem tab's port maximun speed.
Hum, that is tricky. If always is 28.8, that it is because there is a software that is avoind themodem to transmit faster. The port is suppossed to be 111kb or something like that. So, are you using any vendor software to connect? I mean, AOL or other? If so, go to My Network>View Network Connections and try to dial up from there. Also you can create anew fresh connection or view the properties of the existing one.
Finnally, I also presume you won't have a downloader sofware or firewall etc. Some of these can be customize to allow only certain speed.
I will try my dialup some time this week too...

Yeah, i have it set to 115200bps, and i don't use any vendor software, just the good old windows dial-up networking. I've even taken the laptop and configured it exactly as the modem on my desktop, and it's still connecting at 28.8kbps. I'll try to delete this connection, and start with a fresh one.
