T40 HD is dead, have living T42, do not have recovery CD

#1 Post by trharlan » Sun Feb 05, 2006 3:37 pm

The hard drive on my T40 is totally dead (I did manage to pull the important files off of it before it kicked completely, thanks), and I need to get it running again.

A new drive is ordered from IBM, though I do not know when it will get here. Because I absolutely need my laptop (I am a student), I'm thinking about picking up a used drive while I await the replacement.

The problem is that I need an OS. Can I ghost the drive on my T42 to the replacement drive of my T40? If not, does anyone know where I can download an .iso of the recovery CD? I don't want to wait for it from IBM.

Laptop is in warranty, BTW.

Thanks

Ghosting from T42 to T40 is worth a try. The chipsets are very similar. You can boot into XP safe mode first to see at bare minimum if it's working.

Easier and probably safer: Create yourself with R&R of the T42 the recovery disks: one R&R boot CD and either one DVD or six CDs.

These CD/DVD work also for the T40.
