2 Questions / T60 or T42 14" or 15"

#1 Post by rpaturi » Mon Feb 06, 2006 3:33 pm

Hi Experts:

I am a very heavy user of the laptop for my work. I currently have T40 14" and love it. I use it allover the place / as desk top (10%) on the couch (60%) on bed (40%). T40/14" ergonomics are excellent for my usage. I may have used parallel port few times for printing and S-Video port may be couple of times.

I need to upgrade my system, so can you please suggest which system is better... Either case I am planning on getting 9 cell battery.

And I have never seen 15" screen TSeries machine, is there a place that I can look at locally (chicago) and do you think 15" is too heavy or bulky for my type of usage ?

Thanks for your help

- Ravi

Office Depot should have T43. I have seen one 15" locally.

What is the need behind your upgrade?

If I want unbiased comments on T60, I would wait till someone actually uses it for a while. Or better yet, a laptoplogic.com review. To me T60 is still a paperware for now.

No. It's quite alright. A bit larger and heavier than the 14", but you can get a better screen. IMO it also looks nicer with the extra room around the keyboard. I carry mine all around and it's fine.

The dream machine IMO is still the T42p 14". Speeds are not going up that fast but if you are upgrading, you can get a 2.1 in the T42p. I would also stay with the 14" screen. I had a T40 in XGA and now a T42p in SXGA and I would not change anything about it. Additionally, unless you really need the extra battery life, which will be longer on a 14", stay with the 6 cell or get one of each. The 15" model ranges from about .5~.7lbs heavier and is slightly wider and thicker.

I though though / I will use my T40 and upgrade to 14" screen of better resolution. T60 or T4X :) I will wait for real reviews.

Thank you all for your input. Again Thank you.

I need to return my T40 by end of March to my employer and I will be buying one for my self. Now that date has been set.

I know I want 14" screen. Having said This are the options I have

T42/1.86G M
/60G/512M//1024x768/3Year for <XXXX>

T60/1.66G Duial Core
/80G/512M//1400x1050/3Year for <XXXX> (+$200)

Which one should I order (with march end date I can afford to wait)

Funny you mention that specific T60 as I've been looking at it too ;) Is this first model a T43? Also, I see you posted prices which, I believe, are from the EPP site. You'll probably get lots of contacts/questions about where you are getting those prices, see the posting FAQ regarding this.

Anyway, my thoughts on this are:
1) I like the SXGA+ display over the XGA display. I use my machine for development and while I can work with Eclipse, etc for extended periods on the XGA display of my R40, it's a little bit of a pain toggling to other apps so much.
2) My perception is the benefits of a dual core system (overall system "snappiness", consistent performance under load before going off a cliff, etc) are there even on a slower dual core processor like the 1.66 gigahertz. I think that the benefits outweigh the overall slower "straight line" speed of the processor.

I'd be leaning pretty heavily to the T60 in this case...Good luck either way...you may not get that T60 by the end of March...
