speed up X41 by booting from 7200 HD in ultrabase-

#1 Post by aweingrad » Mon Feb 06, 2006 5:39 pm

For those of us who are waiting on the X60, I came up with the above (obvious) scheme to tide me over with speed.

I'm putting a 100GIG (hitachi or seagate 7200RPM) into the ultrabase for speed and booting from it.

I imagine i could leave the native 60 Gig HD in place for travel and just chang the boot sequence in the bios when I need to.

My question is LOUD Hitachi vs QUIET somewhat slower Seagate Momentus. Any ideas comparing these two?

PS My thinkpad X41 ultrabase and all is still for sale, but since no one has seriously come along to buy it, I'm upgrading in this fashion, but eventually I'll go to the X60.

Will you go for a 7200 rpm x60 or 5400? Don't you think a 7200 rpm will be too noisy for such a small laptop?

I've heard the hitachi 7200 are wicked noisy, but not the Momentus. So I'll put a momentus into the ultrabase of my X41 and see.

I'm looking for a good price first. The momentus is wicked expensive at the moment. I hope there is good reason for that.

I dont think size of the machine should matter very much. its the sound of the drive. As a matter of fact I am wondering whether putting the drive in the x4 ultrabase might sound proof it a litle bit since its in another layer of equipment.

Hello, I can tell you that it is true the seagate momentus 7200.1 100GB is much quieter than the hitachi 7200 100GB, I have one of each in my T43. The seagate is primary and the hitachi is mounted in the ultrabay hd adapter.

In my model there is just an occasional click noise, while the hitachi sort of buzzes along all the time when it is running. It's as if the seagate has some sort of fancy seek logic which only occasionally makes noise.

The Seagate has the benefit of not causing the T43 bios message in the primary drive slot, while the Hitachi indeed causes the message about unqualified drive. Also Seagate are working on hardware based encryption but i dont think that option is in this drive yet.

Excellent information. I've bought the seagate. I bought the 80 GB 7200 RPm model because it seemed the best cost benefit ratio at the moment. I will install it tonight and report. Keep in mind I am installing it in the X4 ultrabase to speed up an X series machine (X41) not a T series.

I've installed the seagate, very quiet. I dont really notice so much difference in speed, which surprises me. It is a little faster, esp opening up large programs like pagemaker or photoshop, and photos pop up faster, but i expected more snap and speed than I got.

But its just the first hour. But no problem whatsoever with vibration or noise. If I press my hand against the handrest i can just detect a very mild vibration, but it is just about undetectable.

Have you tried this 7200 RPM in the X41 itself? Is it recognized by the BIOS?
