First impressions of my Thinkpad X22

#1 Post by aceo07 » Tue Feb 07, 2006 2:07 am

WOW! It's simply amazing. Aside from the physical beauty, it's fast for an 800mhz laptop. I got from ebay from seller 'rjfal'. It's in great condition.

I upgraded the original 20GB 4200rpm harddrive to a 60GB Hitachi 7k100 7200rpm drive. It's actually quieter than the original drive. The seeking noises are not as high tone so it seems to be quieter. I don't experience the vibrations that others seem to feel.

I bought a 4400mAh battery from ebay. However, the battery that came with the laptop is still good. I got all the IBM software installed and am doing a normal charge now. At 84% and 36Wh, original is 43Wh. Battery is from 3/2002 but first used in 10/2002. Only 18 cycles! Had I known, I wouldn't have bought the generic battery from ebay.

I tried to use a 512MB RAM stick in the laptop. However, it would not POST or beep. Just didn't do anything. I think it is because it's a low density ram stick. Another thread mentioned that it needs high density ram. I'm going to order a new stick and try it. However, EVEN with 128MB of RAM it's quite fast and responsive running WinXP SP2.

I noticed the the fan likes to stay on. I'm not sure if it ever shuts off. I've only been using browser and chat program. Without the fan whirring, I would only hear the tiny tick of the harddriving seeking data once in a while. I would open it up and put new thermal paste on the heatsink/fan but I don't want to risk anything right now.

The original battery just finished charging. 43.2Wh, 100% of full capacity. :)

I'm using the ebay '4400mAh' battery now. DON'T BUY FROM 'johnsxc'. The battery is advertised as new, but it's manufactured in 2001! Full capacity is ONLY 40Wh and the designed capacity is 38.88Wh! Only 1 cycle. First use was 9/2005. The only good thing about it is that it fit more tightly into the battery slot. It's a tiny bit bigger than the IBM battery. It's recharging now at 70%. I just hope that it can reach full capacity. :P

I ordered 512MB RAM from zipzoomfly. It should arrive in a couple of days.

The trackpoint will take some getting used to. I love the CF slot especially since my DSLR uses CF cards.

Any questions? Or suggestions for things to do?

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

I own an X20 (which looks very similar to the X22) and think it's the sexiest-looking laptop I have ever seen. Even prettier than my X40. The X20 looks so smooth and natural.

Check over your BIOS settings carefully.

I had some weird settings on my Power Saving modes, that were causing odd fan behaviour. Also when I was on A/C power the previous owner had set it to run CPU at lowest speed, which was I think 350 MHz. Weird. Anyhow worth trolling through there.

My fan rarely comes on at all.

Now that you mention it, mine doesn't either! I'm wrong in my other statements about hearing the fan, it's the harddrive I'm hearing!

I shined a flashlight into the fan ducts and didn't see the fan blades moving.

I was getting about 53C and the fan still didn't come on.

Following another person's idea, I folded some aluminum foil into a small square and put it in between the heatsink and the cpu. I also put in a fresh layer of Arctic Silver thermal paste.

I'm going to wait a bit and see how high the temperature gets after my little operation. :)

I recently got a X22 off eBay too, and have no regrets :D

Beautiful machine.

I got it, so I could use it at University, but i'm sure it will become handy elsewhere. It's a bit of a down grade from my PC, but I sacraficed speed for size. I've previously owned a IBM Thinkpad 380XD (233MHz, 4Gb HDD, 96Mb RAM) and I used to run Windows XP on it no problem... but that was with a couple of tweaks to the OS.

Like aceo07, i'll want to increase the RAM (to 640) and HD (faster and more space) and another battery.

aceo07: The battery you got off eBay, is it genuine or aftermarket and how does it perform (battery life)?

All and all, Thinkpads rock
Current Machines:
Custom-Built PC (P4 3.2GHz, 2048Mb RAM, 570Gb HD, X800XT VIVO, XP Pro)
X22 (P3 800MHz, 640Mb RAM, 80Gb HD, XP Pro) + Dock
380XD (P1 233MHz, 96Mb RAM, 4Gb HD HD, Debian)
Server (AMD K7 600MHz, 512Mb RAM, 40Gb HD, Debian)

The battery from ebay, from seller 'johnsxc', is aftermarket. It's actually manufactured in 2001. The original IBM battery that came with my X22 was made in 2002. The IBM battery also have more capacity 43Wh, and the aftermarket has 38Wh even though it was advertised as 4400mAh. :P

The battery life on the aftermarket isn't horrible, though I wish it's capacity was better. I watched videos for 3hrs, which went at 530mhz 55% cpu usage. Then I was using other non intensive applications for another 40minutes. The battery got to 8% when I stopped. I could probably get another 30-50minutes if I wasn't doing any hardwork.
