Slow Internet Connection

#1 Post by Kyrai » Tue Feb 07, 2006 1:03 pm

Hello,

The internet connection on my new-ish (6 month old) IBM T42P is noticeably slower than a 2 year old desktop that accesses the internet via the same router.

My son and I have been playing games online together, and the lag on my laptop is becoming quite annoying. He gets in quickly while I'm still loading for several minutes. After I get any initial updates that may come across in startup, the load times are better, but still slower than the desktop, and I often lag a bit while he plays very smoothly.

I was curious and downloaded a song via Itunes on both at the same time (both of us hit download at the same time) and his downloaded very quickly while I waited over a minute.

Both had the windows firewall on, but I turned off the laptop's and still am slower than the desktop. The linksys router has a firewall, but since the desktop is fast, I'm assuming the router is not the problem.

The only issue I could find searching for something like this was related to an audio problem. I used the IBM update utility to update to all the latest drivers/software, but it hasn't helped.

Any help or guidance on what to try would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to the Thinkpad forum !

Well - my suggestion would be antivirus software.

Are you using the same brand and version?

Are you using a wired connection or a wireless connection from your laptop?

Cheers,

Bill

Hi Bill,

I do have different virus protection on the desktop and laptop. I have been using the free subscription of Norton anti-virus that came with the laptop. It is time to change anyway, so I will try changing tonight.

Wireless works fine on all of our PCs, but I keep wireless disabled (2 boys), so we only use wired while in the house.

Thanks so much for replying!

I would suggest taking your T42 to this page (Lenovo Site);...
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... country=us
Click on; 'Detect my system'(Below 'GO')....(You will need to install 'active x'...by clicking banner at top of page...
This should give you your system configuration, which you can then include in your Thinkpad.com signature....This will greatly aid people
to help you in the future...

As to your question;
Sounds to me that you have a fast desktop...perhaps a P4 with a 7200
rpm harddrive & a fast front side buss? (This would have been available 2 yrs. ago...)
If this is the case, (And both are hard wired), your pc would be faster than say, a T42 w/ Pentium M @ 1.8/4x00rpm hdd/etc...I can only guess...

If you would like to equalize the two machines, you might try hard wiring the T42 & conecting the pc wirelessly. (You will need a wireless card for your pc)...

Hi,

I changed my virus protection last night and left it off after uninstalling to test a bit with my desktop and older laptop. Unfortunately, it was still just as slow and laggy.

I then downloaded a free trial of Iolo's SystemMechanic (recommended by a friend) and ran a registry clean and connection optimizer. It is still not as good as my desktop or previous laptop, but it definitely helped a lot.

Thanks for the help. This may be the best I can do. Seems like I shouldn't have lag on this IBM laptop when the Toshiba satellite that it replaced never seemed overly laggy and still downloads faster. However, I am very happy the IBM laptop is working better now. It was quite unacceptable before.

I appreciate the replies. :)

Some suggestions to further optimize speed...

Make sure you have most recent Software installer.
(v3.21.0601) Link below...

Run Software Installer...
Restart...
Run checkdisk...(My computer/rclk preload local c:/properties/tools/
check now/auto fix file system errors/start/yes)...
Restart...
Defrag...
Restart...
Set power options to; 'Best system performance'...

Use task mgr; >ctrl/alt/delete< to check apps, processes, & performance...
[Look for apps or prosesses running in the background that are using inordinate ammounts of cpu/memory]

I used this link this weekend. I assumed I had the latest update software, but this installer/updater found almost a page of out of date items. I updated Friday night, and although I'm not sure what fixed the problem, the larger lag bumps that were driving me crazy seem to be gone. Downloads are much quicker now. Not quite as fast with the desktop, but not enough difference to worry about.

Thank you so much for the link. :D

Very happy I could help...
The following is a link to a good thread about startup configuration...
You can speed startup time & free up resources by eliminating some items from startup menu...[Start/run(msconfig)/OK]...
