Good price for X-40?

#1 Post by geoleo3 » Tue Feb 07, 2006 4:03 pm

Hi all,

I just bought a X-40 for $800, it's half a year old, with 1.2GHz, 1.0GB of RAM, 40Gb ultra-clicking HDD. What do you think?I really need some feedback. Thanks!

You might want to post in the X-series forum about this, since you're not selling or buying anything here.

If it includes 2.5 years of warranty, then it's a big bargain indeed!

Moved :)

That looks like a pretty darn good deal on that X40 you got there, ultra-mobile and still quite powerful; it gets even better if that includes the warranty... :)

Ummm, this is Pentium M, and 1.2 Ghz is equivalent to, I guess, 2.0 GHz Pentium 4.

Pentium M ULV Model; so that is near the fastest you can go whilst still retaining a good battery life for an ultra-portable; also, speed isn't everything. I can bet you that you will get more use out of a large memory upgrade with now rather than paying alot more to bump the CPU up to 1.8GHz. :)

Christopher is absolutely right. And besides, for most people (who use their computers mainly for email, surfing the internet, word processing, and simple games like Solitaire), even 366MHz Pentium II is adequate. That's why many of us are still busy buying 5-year-old computers. I just got an X20 last week, which has a 500MHz Celeron processor and is okay even for Photoshop and Adobe Professional.

It doesn't have an optical drive though. I still need an external CD drive, and if there's a problem iwth the system. i wouldn't be able to reformat it in the future without hte optical drive

If you are unhappy with the X40, you can sell it for $850 (so you make a profit of $50) and many people here would be more than willing to buy it.

OMFG....You have to be kidding me.... You know what an X40 1.4 LV 512 ram 40gb hdd costs in Sweden? - 28450 SEK = 3675 USD! That's new ofcourse, but when it's used it's still alot more expensive, like 15-16000 SEK...

You got a great deal man!

$800 for a X40. Were you wearing a ski mask when you bought that? That's a crazy good price. Enjoy your new computer.

Freezes? What are the situations under which it freezes?

Also, what model is it? My friend has never had the wireless drop suddenly on an X40; neither have I on my T43. The few times that happened to me was because the router wasn't configured correctly and/or the gateway had refreshed itself and took its time assigning IPs to systems that wanted to get on the Net.

yeah i don't know, the guy that sold it to me said that he might have changed the configuration or settings once, but he wasn't sure. Do you know how it can be fixed?
Thanks chris!

Well, you should be able to create a set of restore disks first off. Run the Software Installer and see what new updates it can find for your system.

There are two ways to check the model number:

1.) Press the blue "Access IBM" button and click on System Information; that should disply the machine model number, along with oher information.

2.) There should be a sticker on the bottom of the Thinkpad that has the model number on it as well.

Are you using Access Connections or just the Windows Wireless Application?

If nothing happens when you press "Access IBM", then the previous owner might have erased the ~5GB hidden partition on the hard drive. Find out the total capacity of the hard drive, and how much of that capacity is visible to Windows. If the two values are the same, then the hidden partition containing files and info for generating the restore disks is gone. Remember, though, that a "40GB" hard drive has 40,000,000,000 bytes, which actually corresponds to only around 37GB. So, if Windows sees 37GB, then there is no hidden partition.

That means the HPA got taken off at some point before. You can still get most of the IBM Utilities from the IBM/Lenovo website. You might even be able to get IBM to ship you the Factory Install disks too. I would, however, first ask the guy you bought it from if he has the factory install CDs first.

unplug our computer from your network. (From another computer)download nod32 from www.nod32.com and burn it on a cd, together with definition updates. Start your laptop, press F8 like crazy after the IBM logo at boot and select Failsafe mode when the meny pops up. When your lappy is in windows, install nod32 and scan/clean. Lather, Rinse and Repeat :)
