XP or 2000?
XP or 2000?
Hey all,
I just purchased a refurbished A22m P3 1.0 ghz, 256mb ram and was wondering what operating system you guys would use. I realize the ram might be a bit skimpy for XP, but let me know what you think and what you personally us as your os?
P.S. I have an XP Pro and 2000 Pro cd, but I would rather install XP.

XP or W2K
The A2/3x series have 2 SO-DIMM sockets. My wife is on her second one of these units (A21e then A30) and my sister-in-law has an A21m that I just did a fresh XPP load. Those units seems to run fine on 256Mb of RAM with XPP. They are a little slow compared to my T2x machines running 512Mb, but not terribly noticable on web/email type stuff over wireless. I've also run a variety of TPs on W2K as well and liked it's simple no nonsense interface, but XP is so easy to work with. One issue though is that PC100 RAM (A20/21/22) is quite a bit more expensive than PC133 (A30), especially if you get into the larger sticks (eg. 256Mb per).

There are good arguments for 2000. When I went looking for a refurbished T23, I looked for one loaded with 2000 and did not want one with XP. Why?
User control. And Win 2000 has much less bloat and thus greater speed on older hardware. As for online security, you get true security from firewalls, updated virus-scanners, Spyware scanners, Broadband routers with hardware firewalls. using Firefox or Opera & informed common sense.
If you prefer gaming with dedicated gaming boxes like XBox and Playstation & PCs for everything else, it is unlikely you need the latest O/S

I'm more than pleased with the 2K and Office 2K on my T22. I use it more for work stuff than the PC at home which has XP on it.

Then go ahead and install XP. There's no significant advantage to W2K with a 1.0 ghz processer and 256mb of memory. XP and W2K run about equally well on a T21 with an 800mhz processor and 256mb or memory.P.S. I have an XP Pro and 2000 Pro cd, but I would rather install XP.
Regarding RAM prices, PC133 has jumped considerably in ebay in the past few months since all the used T23's started coming on the market.

I think this is the answer.ab3n wrote:... I would rather install XP.
After the install, if you think it runs slow (too much disk accessing), then you can buy more RAM at that point.

Win2000 was the best win OS IMO!
XP is that much better, again; you can make XP function like 2000 without loosing none of the important features.
I have a "how to" at home (at work now); which I will try to post.(optimizing XP to run faster, with a Win2K look)
