Maybe you didn't connect the LCD cable well enough, and maybe you broke it. Check the LCD connectors. It may also be the light of the LCD that isn't working, check if when you put it under a strong light, if you see anything on it. Also, see with the regular VGA connector if an external screen works.

I never did anything like that, so I am speculating.

the suggestion of plugging in an external monitor is good, make sure everything is working. You may be running at a higher resolution than what the LCD is capable of and in that case, it will be black. Is the T42 motherboard a high res version? like 1400x1020 or even 1600x1200?

Start -> Control Panel -> Display -> Settings tab

There on 'Screen resolution' there is a slider, drag it to a modest value. Like 1024x768 or 800x600.

If the problem is too high resolution setting, then you should be able to see something when the computer starts (boots). If that is the situation, then press F8 when it starts, and choose to get into safe mode. There you would be able to lower the resolution, and at least you'll know the screen is connected good. Also (Edited in) if your external screen doesn't show anything, try safe mode with it too, since the external screen may also have problems with a too high resolution. Good luck.

PS. You have guts. (Taking apart the mother board when you don't know so much about computers). I appreciate that.
