WHy so many updates on Thinkpad Software Installer?

#1 Post by wantathinkpad » Wed Feb 08, 2006 5:48 pm

I bought my T43 in August and hadn't updated anything till January about two weeks ago. I noticed of updates have varied for many things however many new updates were December 25, or 28 and a few in October. I just ran the software installer today and saw that there are several new updates that came out today and on the 6th. Is this a common practive for IBM to put out alot on the same day. I like it. Just surprised there are so many althought they don't seem to be major.:

Easy Eject Utility
Thinkpad Migration
Access Connections
Trackpoint Features
Bluetooth with Enhance Data Rate Software
Hotkey Features
Ultra nav wizard
Access Connections (found this last one kind of odd because two weeks ago software installer didn't pick up v4.01 and so I downloaded from the website..there is an update to v4.01 already?)

If you look at the changelog there are all sorts of little tiny fixes - not worth downloading some of those updates. Beware of Access Connections 4.11 - it slowed my boot up to over 1 minute and caused bad wifi connection ... Maybe other have better luck with it ...

Access Connections 4.11 works fine on my T42 with the Intel 2200 BG wireless adapter.

On my T41 the new Access Conection takes a few seconds more to change between profiles than previous version..

I put all the new update in last night. I installed TP Utility manually so as to bring the DOS updates along. I uninstalled Access Connections and installed the new version 4.11a manually. Then I installed everything else via Software Installer. It all seems to be working normally.

Apparently AC 4.11a works with the Sony Ericcson card (which I have). I tried this some time ago with V3.x and it failed, so I will try again some time with the new version.

I did all the updates on a T23 with XP yesterday and now when it boots up I get a window showing the command line parameters for Thinkvantage Access Connections. It does this every time I boot. Is this normal?

That shouldn't happen ... unless you disabled GUI boot and activated some other clever feature to print boot sequence files to your screen. :?

It's not a DOS box, it's a "windows" window and all I did was run the updates, nothing special.

Maybe you can capture the box and show it to us. The box that comes up for me is the Connection dialogue box (a Windows window). For a few versions now, Access Connections starts as a Service and that Window comes up occasionally before Windows gets fully started. Sometimes I see it at the same time as my Windows login screen. Is this what you are seeing? and if so, it is entirely normal. ... JD Hurst

Upload it to imageshack (http://www.imageshack.us) and then copy and paste the link here.

Looks like what jittery posted. See the image link in his initial post.

cerebral_mamba found the solution in this thread. Read his post near the end of the thread on page 2.

Wow, Thanks GomJabbar. That is the exact thing I get. I don't know how I missed that thread. Thanks for the pointer.
I didn't uninstall the old version of AC before upgrading. That is the problem. I'll get it taken care of now.

Sorry-- I also missed this thread, but I do have the same problem. I was UNABLE to uninstall the old version-- when I tried to do that using the Control panel's Add or Remove programs, nothing happened. So I intalled 4.11a over the old version I had (3.71), but the problem of those nagging QCtray windows persists.

Further news: I have now used the Installer to remove 3.71 and install 4.11a, but the problem persists. When I tried to uncheck some AC related programs from the STARTUP tab of MSCONFIG, the system insisted that I reinstate them... This is very annoying!
