Anyone swapped a faceplate from UJ-822S to UJ-832S for DL?

#1 Post by noetus » Thu Feb 09, 2006 12:29 am

Has anyone successfully installed a UJ-832S DVD burner, which is manufactured for the Z60 series, into a T4x series? (This is to get Double Layer (DL) burning and a slightly faster drive.) I can see from photos that the faceplate on the 832 is flat, while the 822 on the T4x has a bevelled lower edge, to match the bevel on the computer itself. So to get a proper fit, you'd have to swap the faceplates as well. From reading around on the 'net, I have discovered that it is sometimes possible to swap faceplates between drives, sometimes not. Has anyone tried with this combo :?:

Is the 832S a 9mm or 11.5mm burner? The T4x's only take a 9mm burner.

It's a 9mm but I've heard rumors that the DL capabilities are disabled by IBM/Lenovo. Although if it works for the Z-series, I don't see why it wouldn't work in the T-series unless there was some kind of Bios disabling.

I don't know anyone who has this drive and has burned DL disks.

Anyone?

It makes sense to me that the burner capabilities can be disabled in the firmware of the drive, but in the BIOS? Seems far fetched to me.

Yes, please help bring us Thinkpadphilics into the 21st Century.

If it truly is only a faceplate difference, I don't understand why this isn't offered by the Lenovo Group in the first place.

I had thought of this, one reason why I wanted to ask on the forums first... It may be that Lenovo aren't offering it for the moment to encourage purchases of the Z60/T60 ? As far as I can tell reading round forums, on eBay etc, it *should* work, even with no faceplate swap (it's just look odd in that case).
