best USB HD 250gig

#1 Post by kuma » Thu Feb 09, 2006 1:12 am

I'm looking for a HD 250gig, that is powered by the USB, and I can use with my iBook. Hopefully around $150.
Thanks.

Bus powered USB drive

You are basically looking for something that doesn't exist...yet. Virtually all bus powered externals use notebook drives due to their power consumption characteristics (meaning low). Currently, notebook drives top out at around 100Gb. So if you want something around 250Gb, your pretty much stuck with 3.5" (read desktop) drives and those basically all require external power. That's about all I know.

You may want to double check some other threads or other members who have done a lot with external drives such as: dsvochak.

Schen's comments are correct. For 250gb you'll need something like what described here http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=20525

3.5" inch enclosures are readily available at your favorite computer parts retailer, as are desktop hard drives. You just have to make sure the interface in the enclosure matches the drive interface (that is a SATA enclosure for an SATA drive and a PATA/IDE case for a PATA/IDE drive)
