I have just installed XP Pro on a T21 that my son gave me. I was very scared of up dating the Bios in case I ruined the M\B but using IBM's
auto installation system everything was easy. Regarding installing XP
there was no need to uninstall W2k. Go into the Bios set to boot from
CD drive, reboot with XP disc in the drive, when the message 'Press any
key to boot from CD' appears, press any key!! you only get a few seconds to act [or you probably get the screen that you saw] if you hit
any key you will be ask if you want to set up or repair, hit enter to set
up windows. press F8 to agree to the licence, If set-up detects an existing O\S and asks if you want to repair it, press Esc to skip the repair.
The set-up will ask whre to install 'Windows' Highlight "C: Partion 1" press
D to delete it, then L to confirm it. Next press Enter to install Windows on
the "Unpartitioned space" Select 'Format NTFS' [not the quick option] and
continue the installation. Later during installation if you don't want a
password leave it blank, the choice is yours. Basically, once the installation begins, it's just a matter of following the on-screen instrutions.
Once XP is up & running get onto the IBM web site, download their "Software Installer" select 'Scan my system" it will scan your H/D
& supply the necessary drivers\utilities, you then click to install them.
I also updated the Bios by dowloading their "Plug-in" then clicked
on the latest update for my T21 which was installed automatically!!
If it hadn't been for IBM's auto-install feature I would have absolutely lost!! Hope this helps anyone who is contemplating the XP route.
One thing I forgot to mention is during XP install it reboots, & says again
"Press any key to boot from CD." DON'T do this the second time, just wait and it will carry on with the install.
