i've searched Lenovo's website, no instructions on how to remove and replace CPU.. any fellow thinkpad users can show mi??
i think can use most Dothan cores except the 533Mhz FSB ones..

Get the Thinkpad Hardware Maintenance Manual.
Make sure you *need* a CPU upgrade first. I replaced the 4200 rpm drive in my T41 with a 7200 rpm drive. Then I replaced the 1.4Ghz Banias with a 1.8Ghz Dothan CPU. The drive made the biggest difference, and I did the CPU, in part, just to do it. There was a modest gain in performance. So unless you are changing CPU types *and* adding 500 Ghz or more, you won't see much difference.
To replace the CPU, get the hardware manual as has already been suggested. Remove the keyboard and the palm rest. That will expose the CPU. If you do change it, work carefully and don't forget thermal compound. The thermal compound is *not* optional.

i'm thinking of upgrading to at least 2ghz or 2.1ghz. the Pentium 755 or 765. i've already upgraded my drive to the E7K60 and increased the ram to the max of 2gb. i've seen the performance increase. i just have that 'itch' to upgrade, wanna make it the best!!! haha, well my ego actually!!jdhurst wrote:Make sure you *need* a CPU upgrade first. Well, your thinkpad is already quite powerful... meanwhile, why don't you upgrade that compaq with a PL/IP3t and a P3 Tualatin 1.4 Ghz ? You´ll find the pieces quite cheap in ebay now and have a lot of fun!i'm thinking of upgrading to at least 2ghz or 2.1ghz. the Pentium 755 or 765. i've already upgraded my drive to the E7K60 and increased the ram to the max of 2gb. i've seen the performance increase. i just have that 'itch' to upgrade, wanna make it the best!!! haha, well my ego actually!!

i've yet to play with the Compaq N400c. i've lent it to my roommate whose Toshiba M30's motherboard just crashed. he can only repair it when he goes back to Singapore during our Easter break.
i was searching for P3M's on ebay but i was told that the cpu is soldered on.. and oso, the IDE bus is limited to ATA66, so its kinda slow.. i've tot of upgrading the hdd as well.. haha.. i've too many evil plans...

I will piggy back on your post, How hard is it to replace the motherboard? I am contemplating replacing my T41 (Radeon 9000) motherboard with a T42p (FireGL T2) motherboard after finding one cheap. I have done everything short of a motherboard replacement on a T4x.

r u referring to the THinkpad or the Compaq N400c?jdhurst wrote:The CPU is under the fan. Unscrew the fan and lift it out (carefully if you choose not remove the keyboard bezel). The CPU is under that and is not soldered in. I forget without looking, but it was easy to remove once the fan was out. And don't forget the thermal compound. ... JD Hurst
