router (WAG54GS) not detected by t42, any suggestions?
hello everyone, I just got a wireless router (WAG54GS) and am in the process of trying to set it up to work with my 2373 4WG thinkpad t42.
During setup the install software is trying to access the router via ethernet cable plugged into the laptop, for some reason this fails.
I installed the intel(R) pro/1000 mt drivers thinking these must be the drivers needed to get gigabit network kickstarted, didn't solve the problem.
I've gone into device manager to see that there's a exclaimation mark beside network controller under other devices, could this be the problem here.
I'm stumped, can anyone give me any ideas of what to do next.

Use Software Installer to get the latest Network WiFi driver from IBM/Lenovo.
Do an ipconfig and see whether or not it comes up blank and what data it reports if it works. If it doesn't work, you need to re-install the drivers.
Are you using Access Connections? If so, what version?

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

hey, thanks for all the speedy replies
thing is I've actually got two thinkpads, one's gonna be permanently planted near the router (kinda like a desktop would be otherwize) and the other's gonna be free-roaming around the house.
So i'm just trying to config the first one thinking I won't actually need to enable wireless on this one coz it's gonna be straped onto the router.
I'm just trying to get it 'talking' with the router using the software install cd and it's drawing a blank. I'll try updating the drivers using software installer, but could it be something really simple that i'm missing here, like enabling networking in windows or something? why won't these two things speak to each other?
cheers steve

It could be the router. I have a WRT54G router fail out of the box and would not connect. I call LinkSys support and they had me reset the router, connect to the router via a static IP which took me right to a firmware update screen, and then update the firmware. Then it worked. Can you connect another way, find the firmware for that router (and version level), download to the ThinkPad and then call LinkSys support.
