Cursor and machine in a state of stupor after updates

#1 Post by bluedoc » Sun Jul 18, 2004 8:16 pm

Hi,

I finally got the new Thai keyboard and after installation the machine is now a pleasure to use. There is really no questions about the Thai vs. China assembled keyboards quality. It not a trend nor a psychosomatic situation.

So I spent my weekend transfering files and updating my new Thinkpad. The computer was very quick before the updates but now the cursor is in a semi-permanent state of stupor. The cursor is really, really slow and jiggers. With every restarts it's in a normal speed and then slows down again. Normally, the machine is in 600mhz+ mode but now on occasions it is around 200mhz cycle.

I didn't install any out of the ordinary
1. Bios update
2. embedded update
3. Norton internet security.
4. zonealarm. Uninstalled since it kept going on the net to register despite autoupdate turned off.

What exactly is javaw.exe? Also it kept logging on the internet and listening to all ports?? Webcheck.dll? xps1.dll? msxml.dll?

Multiple, multiple "generic service hosts" logging on the net. What are these.

Why is sonic update kept logging on? MSN Messenger also.

I only wish IBM would include a physical button to turn off wifi access.

Any diagnosis and constructive suggestions friends?

Javaw is part of Sun's Java (that is coming pre-installed on new ThinkPads). Go to Java in the Control Panel and disable Auto Updates. In fact, you can check Media Player, Quick Time and Real Audio for Auto updates and disable them if you don't want the checking to occur.

I have a couple of Sonic files in i386 (run File Search), and it says it is part of S3 Sonic Vibes but not installed.

A number of the other things are standard Microsoft services. Do a File Search on whatever you are questioning and see what folder it lives in. That will often tell you something.

I set my ThinkPad to run at "Always ON". I still get decent battery life, but slowness is not a problem.

Ok, will go through the list and turnoff the auto-updates. Dump norton?? But I am already feeling vulnerable as it is when all wi-fied up. What are some good firewalls?

On a curious note, whenever the computer is really slow I tried control, alt, delete combination and nothing is really running except maybe the included norton antivirus.

Also, in my haste to update I updated the ultranav program, would this be the culprit? Where do you go to turn up the processor speed?

Thanks

Three different points:
1. To set the processor speed go to the power managament properties, look for settings, and set to Always ON.

2. Properly installed, Norton A/V 2003, Norton Internet Security 2003 and Symantec Client Security 1.1 should not be using any resources.

3. Run the Task Manager and minimize it to the System Tray. When nothing is running, it should show roughly zero percent utilization.

One thing I learned about Norton and about performance once was to turn off the machine, wait 30 minutes, turn it on and get it running, do not run any applications, then wait 15 minutes. Then use the file search tool to search for all files changed today. Sort the most recent to the top. Then read and think about what it is telling you. In my case, on a prior machine, Norton was checking Instant Messenger constantly even though I wasn't running it. I disabled IM checking and the machine returned to normal.

There is no one answer. Use Task Manager and File Search as tools. Check your Services to see what is running. Find, download and install StartupCop from PC Magazine. Use this to disable (but not uninstall) things from starting with Windows that you do not need.
