t20 CPE upgrade

#1 Post by Sal » Sat Feb 11, 2006 12:13 am

Can anyone help me? I removed the 700 Ghz processor and replced it with the 1Ghz. The hardware process went well, i went by the IBM manual.
But I cannot get it to move out of the initial screen - where it ask for F1 Bios set-up or F12 temporary boot drive. Under F1, I did tinker with the bios setting the time and original factory defaults. F12 does nothing.
I confess to being a novice and appreciate your help.

did you replace the cooler for the T20 by one from the T22?

you must do this as the T20 cooler is not sufficient to deal with the additional heat output from the 1.0Ghz cpu.

that might be the reason why you cant get past the boot screen.
the heat coming off the cpu might be too much for the thermal compound to take.

Thanks. I put old 700 processor back in and everything is working fine.
With the upgraded processor, the detailed boot said the speed was speed step 800 and I ordered 1GHz. Will the t20 step it down to 800? Or was I sent the incorrect CPU?
ONe more thought, does the new CPU warm-up that fast for the computer to shut down after just a minute?
Thanks again.....Sal

read the code off the top of your "1.0Ghz cpu" and then post it here. we can check whether it really is a 1.0ghz cpu.

any yes. if your using the stock T20 cooler, the cpu temp can rise rapidly as the cooler doesnt use metal to contact the core but rather a crappy thermal compound.

The number at the top is: 7149A585 SL53S. The number just below this is: KP001/256. It is an Intel chip.

Thanks. I'm not sure what the 1000/700 means but I hope to find out. I sent an email to the seller asking for an explanation as to why the computer is showing only 800 Mhz. I'll let you know since I see that an upgrade is soon to be for your t20.
One upgrade I did make just today is a DVD burner for the ultrabay 2000.
This seems to be working well on the read side. I have yet to test it on the burn side since I need burn software and am deciding on one, I hope to find something free. But these I am finding out come with conditions that do not excite me.
Thanks again....Sal

@ sal
1000/700 means 1000Mhz on AC/ 700Mhz on Battery
thats the speed rating of the cpu.

btw where did you get the dvd-burner for the laptop? also how much did it cost?

You're right. It was a little pricy. But I wanted the DVD R-RW. The CD R-RW was a lot less: half or less than what I paid for the DVD. But I wanted the recordable DVD so I had to pay the price which was the best I could find and I looked all over the inetenet. Thanks.....Sal

PS: Any idea on where I could find some good free DVD burning software?
If not, OK, I'll post the question.

well i use linux so all my software is free anyways!
umm if your going to use windows, i would recommend Nero. Its definitely worth the price. Im not too sure about the free stuff out there. They usually have limitations on burning. Like they will only let you burn 100mb etc.
