The settings changes from cable company to cable company.
However, as in a dial-up the settings that you may need are straight-forward and easy to configure.
If you don't have a paper with the settings, yo may need to contact the cable company support to obtain those parameters.
The most easy things it is to put those parameters in the router.
This parameters are like Internet IP Address are dinamically assigned by Telstra Bigpond Cable or not, Domain Name Server (DNS) Address, etc...
Are you using a router? Which?
Whatever is the case, you should be able to connect alone with the router or a windows configuration. No additional software is neccesary at all.

X220t IPS but but a bit unhappy with it
T60p 2007-93U 1600x1200 IPS (T42p is an overall better machine though. Lack of new IPS Thinkpads keeps me buying these older models!)
T42p 2373-KXU 1600x1200 IPS (The best ever!!)
A20p 2629-6UU 1400x1050 (My first Thinkpad!)

No router, I have a Motorola SURFBOARD Cable Modem and thats it
When I plug in the cable and type ipconfig i can see all the IP addy's etc... but have to run the ISP software connector to access the internet...I will contact the ISP see if they can provide me with any further information but Tesltra is notorious for being wankers

Cable companies are well known for their pathetic call centers. Don't feel bad about yours only.
I don't know howfamiliar you are with windows...
-Go to Network Connections: (click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections)
-Then click on Create a new Connection.
-Next
-Connect to the internet
-Setup my connection manually
