Upgrading R51 4200RPM HDD to 7200RPM

#1 Post by firestarter » Sun Feb 12, 2006 10:09 pm

Hi, i want to know, is it possible to upgrade to the Hitachi Travelstar 7200RPM HDD that im going to buy from an online reseller? The reason im asking is because i've heard the T series had some issues with that.

The R51 uses the same chipset as the T42, and I _assume_ it uses PATA drives and PATA controllers, so you should encounter the issues that are present on the T43 with its SATA-PATA bridge.

ok heres some good news. I installed the Hard Drive today without any problems as the BIOS had no problems with the new HDD. As i mentioned before i already had an OEM CD of Win XP PRO which came with my desktop so i installed that on it and installed it without any issues.

Then the Windows asked to be activated and here it gave me a bad news saying that i cannot activate it. I realised that i had already activated it with my desktop pc and now win OS is giving me 30 day deadline to buy another copy. I cannot make any recovery cds due to the fact that my thinkpad only has a cd-rom drive. Can i get my problem solved by asking IBM to send me the recovery cd set?

As long as it is under warranty, they will charge you with a certain fee.

thanks for the input. As long as its not over $50, then i can deal with it. Otherwise i might as well buy an OEM OS. Doesn't the thinkpad come with a basic 1 year warranty? My thinkpad is only a week old (bless its CPU).

This is exactly what i got, elvis. I got my laptop about a week ago so it came with the latest BIOS and i didnt need to do anything to make it work other than pop in the new HDD and install the OS. Same BIOS version as yours i.e 3.19. Goodluck.

The IBM recovery CDs were $50? I also needed a copy of those CDs. $50 seems like a lot for the discs.

wow, just got my restore pack today. IBM overnighted them to me which is a very nice surprise. It has a total of 8 CDs. Sweet!

So you bought a computer with only a CD-ROM and they charge you $45 to get restore CD's (unless you burn them)?

IMHO that's something that should be clearly stated on the website when you buy a computer without a burner then... that's a hidden fee, since you did pay for the Windows XP license that came with your laptop, and have the right to a backup of it.

IMHO they should just include 1 or 2 DVD's with the image with all computers. I don't think it's that extreme of an idea for a manufacturer who ships $2k laptops.

Not to rain on anyone but has anyone thought about heat from the faster drives? the main reason some system have 5400rpm drives isn't just speed wasn't there it has to with heat. Fast drives run with more heat out put so had anyone had problems with this? and if not how did you deal with the extra heat from the drives if you had it?

Just a thought folks.

I haven't noticed any heat from the new 7200 RPM drive at all. It's almost as quiet (barely noticeable) as the original 4200RPM drive that the thinkpad came with and no vibrations whatsoever.

Power equals heat

#15 Post by cpn » Thu Mar 09, 2006 8:27 pm

I haven't ordered mine yet, but I thought about the heat issue also. So I went to the Hitachi website and looked at the specs for the 7k100 80gb drive that I want to order and compared it to my current 4200 drive. The 7200 actually uses less power then my current 4200 rpm drive so I am confidant that it will produce the same or a lesser amount of heat. At least that is my take on it...

Yes I ooked this up after I posted they have fix the heat problems with faster drives so they can work in laptops at the 7200rpms.

this is good as the large deask top drives still have more heat from them than the laptop drives now.

Ok this looks like somthing i will look into my self too.

Is the new drive 7K100 model ? I'd like to replace the 4200 rpm drive in my R51 1829 as well.
