New Hard Disk unbootable after good restore

#1 Post by Sbrehaut » Mon Feb 13, 2006 2:38 am

I've been using my std 40 GB drive in the CD slot (on my T-42) for quite awile while I thought about what I wanted to upgrade my primary hard drive in the regular Hard Disk slot to.

Well today I installed a new 80GB drive in the Hard Drive tray and used the Factory Restore disks to bring it back on line. It seemed to operate fine (the old drive was out of the machine at the time, replaced by the CD unit). When I went to reboot the machine after having inserted the 40GB drive in the CD bay (to start moving some files over), I entered the BIOS to see which drive would launch first, I could see both drives listed in the boot order and selected one to boot first. After doing so my machine will not boot, with either drive alone in the machine. I get weird blue screens. I think the problem might be in the way the OS hates new hardware in the system. In any case I need to get back to at least my old 40 GB image quickly.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Bill,

Thankfully I had an ext USB HDD adaptor. I tried booting to the new 80 externally with no luck even after rechecking the boot order. My T42 has Bios ver 3.5a and embedded controller ver 3.01a. I'm not totally sure I have USB support in the current version.

The error messages I get on POST are:

Intel Boot Agent
Media Test Failure

and Blue Screen " No More IRPstacks)

I see that I can get updated BIOS and Embeded controller vers though to do so I might have to first update the BIOS to an interim level as both of the latest versions require each other to work.

Any ideas?

Evidently my system board is fried. Seems a bit weird to happen now. I'm going to see about hints on using 2 boot drives on it when I get it back later this week.
