New HD for T41

The 60GB on my T41 is getting a bit cramped, and I don't know if I'm ready for my T60 yet (maybe at the end of the year). So, I thought I'd try to see if I could upgrade the HD. Any suggestions on vendors and/or brands of drives? I would like at least a 100GB 7200, if such an animal exists that will fit.

Welcome to the Thinkpad Forums

There are quite a few HDDs out there that you might like; it looks as if you are primarily after space. So I would make size a bigger priority than the RPM, especially if cost is an issue. There is the 120GB Seagate HDD, and I think they are going to come out or already have a 160GB model, but that is 5400RPM if I am not mistaken; then there is the wide-spread 60GB 7200RPM Hitachi HDD, etc. You will most likely get more bang for your buck with a larger HDD at 5400RPM than a slightly smaller one at 7200RPM.

Thanks! I'm after both if I can get it. That is, I definitely want 100GB, but I'd rather have the 7200 than the 5400 if the cost difference isn't too much. I know there's an IBM (Hitachi) 80GB 7200, and I know there's a 100GB 7200 for the T60, but I believe it's SATA.

Anything special I have to watch out for? That is, I need a 2.5" laptop drive that's 9.5mm tall (if I remember correctly). Is the T41 ATA100? Anything else? Any vendors that have good track records?

Hitachi has been good for me for quite awhile; Seagate is also good. Those are the two I have had the most experience on when it comes to HDDs in Thinkpads. On an X40 I have used, there is a pretty good Toshiba HDD in it. I would go with either IBM/Hitachi or Seagate for now.

I saw in another place today that at least some IBM T4x BIOS' don't recognize HD's > 80GB. Is this true? I have a T41.

I have the Seagate Momentus 100GB/5400RPM and I love the thing. Plus it comes with a 5 year warranty.

MTBF is what you are after, usually for 5400RPM drives and above the motor has to be WELL built!

I would not recommend Toshiba drives, for some reason I can't seem to get more then a year and a half out of one, and loosing all or most of your data can be a PITA.

The Fujitsu drives seem to be the worst ones......

Most of the IBM/Hitachi (ex-ibm) drives seem OK, but I have had high failure rates on them as well (mostly the 4200RPM ones).

So far the Seagates are doing well, as well as the WD Scorpio's I have been using. No failures yet and I have deployed a lot of them. They seem to be really quiet drives as well. My standard 40GB on the T41 was a noise maker compared to these new ones( the 40GB was never a loud drive, so imagine how quiet these new ones are).
