I am not new to Laptops and I have IBM workstations, I am however, new to thinkpads. What is the 'thing' that looks like 'teeth' on the bottom. I am guessing a port for a docking station. Is it supposed to be open like that? No some sort of cap/cover?

Probably the dock port, yes. Yes, it's supposed to be open.

There is a sliding plastic cover which protects the actual pins themselves (like on T4*) - it is internal to the port and preferable to the doors which used to cover the dock ports but could break off if uncareful.

It does look like it has clip holes for a cover.
