2GB sodimm

#1 Post by donking! » Wed Feb 15, 2006 1:56 am

Does anyone know about 2GB sodimms for the T60, if I want to max out the memory on one of these?

As far as I can tell only Edge and Smart Modular make 2GB sodimms right now. And they're being mainly marketed at the iMacs and MacBooks.

Is Edge or Smart Modular decent quality memory?

I would wait before you stuck 4Gb of ram into a Windows XP machine. Anything over 2gb is really wasteful right now with memory management stuff, and given the prices of them, give it a year or so to when it might really help.

Wasteful? Not for running apps like VMWare Workstation or VMWare Server (now free!) which use kernel memory space instead of the user memory space we are used to using. No /3GB switch needed!

But yes, I generally agree that 2GB (or "just" 1GB) is the sweet spot at the moment. I have the former.

Memory management?

#4 Post by onix » Wed Feb 15, 2006 2:13 pm

What are the memory management issues with XP or 2000? Are they hardware related or OS? Sorry if this has been hashed out before - if so, just send me a link.

My main interest is using Photoshop and InDesign. Everyone tells me that memory is really really important with Photoshop and that there can't be too much. Do you think 3GB wouldn't be any better than 2GB with those programs running simultaneously?

Or more like this. I'm running Photoshop, InDesign, Firefox, Word and maybe a couple other small programs at the same time.

Also, the 2GB sodimm from Smart Modular doesn't cost that much ($330) compared to say two 1GB sodimms from Crucial.
