Can't get network printer install on 2K system from an XP PC

#1 Post by been200mph » Wed Feb 15, 2006 9:19 pm

This is driving me nuts. We just got a network up and running at work, which is the prime reason I bought my laptop. I wanted to be able to access it from anywhere in the RV dealership, as I'm the service administrator. Well, most of the PC's we have are running XP home, but my laptop as well as a few other PC's are on 2K. I can find all of the printers in the network, but on ANY of the 2K machines we cannot select just the Dell 1710's that are used on a couple of the PC's with XP home. I can select and print from any other network printer but the Dells. I've installed the drivers direct from the Dell site on the 2K machines to no avail. Also made sure on the PC's that have the printers hooked to them that they are set for both 2K and XP driver use. Even the tech at Dell had no answers. Anyone got some ideas for me to try? Help!!!

They are both connected via USB ports and have sharing activated on their respective PC's. We had thought about assigning IP's and making them true network printers, but did not feel we really needed to..... at least thus far.

Are other machines running XP able to print to the Dell 1710 printers? And, to make sure I'm not confused, do the Dell 1710 printers show up as available printers on the W2K machines?

Sorry to ask more questions with no suggestions. I'm just trying to narrow down the problem.

If you can't find the printer, can you connect directly?
\\pcname\printername

Look in the the properties of the printer for the printer name and make sure the printer is shared. That usually works when browsing won't.

The other problem may well be XP Home. It's sharing properties are not very business-like and you may wish to convert them to XP Pro.

You may be unable to print to a network printer after you install

It's nice the tech directed you to a solution for this problem. Given the bizarre set of circumstances listed in "Cause" in the MS article I doubt we would have stumbled on an answer.
