Installed latest Access Connections - Wireless disappeared!

#1 Post by noetus » Thu Feb 16, 2006 3:58 pm

I installed to the latest Access Connections today on my T42, which required first installing the latest Wireless drivers. OK, so now I have wireless drivers 4.1.103.133 for a/b/g, and Access Connections 4.11a. However, when I open Access Connections I cannot connect to any wireless network. I can't even search for one - the 'Find Wireless Network' button has disappeared. I tried finding that button under 'Toolbar Options' but it's gone from there, too. It is as if I don't have wireless on my computer at all. Also, when I press Fn+F5 the option to switch the wireless connection on/off has gone to - just the Bluetooth remains. Again, it's as if there is no wireless hardware installed. What has happened? The drivers themselves are all installed and working, according to Windows, and Windows can find wireless connections through the Control Panel (or 'Connect To' under the Start button). ???

Uninstall Access Connections, then uninstall the wireless drivers; reboot, install the desired version of Access Connections *manually* if needed, then reboot again. That should get the wireless working. :)

The software installer has been working wonders for me. I have not had any problems updating when using it.

Seems like one of the better IBM software choices.
...before it's too late.

The software installer is the reason I had this issue! When updating, it wouldn't allow me to update to the most recent Access Connections. Instead, it gave the cryptic message "this software requires a different update before proceeding, please refer to documentation" or some vague words to that effect. So I had to go to the IBM device driver matrix online, read the documentation there for Access Connections, realise I had to install the wireless drivers, and then manually install them. I got the same message again with trying to use the software updater, even though the device manager was showing the latest wireless drivers. So I manually installed Access Connections, which then had this weird problem of not acknowledging that there is any wireless at all on the system! So then I had to uninstall and reinstall both the wireless drivers AND Access Connections, again, manually.

all the magic and still no workie

Ok so i fought all the madness of upgrading and I still couldn't get it to work.

The atheros wireless driver I have installed is 4.1.102.1095. lenov's "software installer" thinks that this is newer than 4.1.102.133 but that's ok i installed it manaully.

upgrade 4.11 access connections. everything appears to work in the UI but it will just not connect to my open wireless ap. though i can see access points, my access points see the mac address of my wireless card.

after a bunch of installs, uninstalls, reinstalls still couldn't get it to work. i returned back to the previous versions and all back to normal. oh well, somehow this needs to be relayed back to lenovo...

It looks to me that his solution is a generic one. The root of the problem being leftover registry entries from previous installs, then uninstalls. Because of the leftover registry entries, the wireless doesn't work like it should - if at all.

I tried everything mentioned in this forum and it did not work for me..and as you may see i am the one who started this thread. After exhausting all options I decided to give "Your Uninstaller! 2006" a try :)

1. Yes, "Your Uninstaller! 2006" scanned my registry after Intel Uninstaller unistalled the wireless drivers and it detected 14 entries in my registry, which it removed.

2. After that I installed the IBM recomended wireless drivers, REBOOTED and now its working :) .. It will not ask you to REBOOT after wireless driver installation, but it is a MUST. Without rebooting, it was showing the same wrong MAC address, and after rebooting everything is great.

All throughout the above steps, I had AC 4.11a installed. After reboot, AC will show the correct MAC address for the wireless NIC :)
