Windows Installer preventing Sun Java from Installing

#1 Post by firestarter » Thu Feb 16, 2006 5:05 pm

Here is the message i keep getting whenever i try to install Sun Java on my brand new R51:

"The installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows installer package" Whats going on?

If you have already downloaded the install file, try deleting this file and do another download. I downloaded from the following site:

Thank you for your input but it's still giving me the same message.

Try uninstalling Java using the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs, and then installing the new Java. ... JD Hurst

The only Java im showing in the Add/Remove is the IBM 32bit Runtime environment for Java V 1.4.1. Should i remove that?

I suppose it could have something to do with your Firewall or possibly your settings in Internet Connections. If you have the access and the time, you can try dial-up to get the file.

Have you tried the Manual Download Option? If possible, save the installation file to your hard disk, and launch it from there. Be sure and be logged on as Administrator to install Java.

FWIW, I still have IBM Java installed as well as the latest from Sun Java, so I do not believe that is your problem.

Just an idea that I don't know too much about. You could download Windows Installer from Microsoft and try to reinstall Windows Installer.

I uninstall all Java before installing a new one, so try that in addition to the suggestions about downloading. I have never had a problem with Sun Java except that (probably because of the McNealy turkey) they are terminally clueless about how to do proper installations. They leave garbage all over the place unless users do it for them.

Sorry for the rant, but well over 50 percent of commercial programmers (including Microsoft programmers) don't have enough business smarts to get themselves to the washroom without wetting themselves.

Ok guys! i can't believe how foolish i was to try to install it through firefox browser, turns out it has to be downloaded though IE. Anyway the install shield did not have any issues letting me install Sun Java successfully and im now relieved.
