Getting the good ol' BSOD

#1 Post by FadeToBlack » Thu Feb 16, 2006 10:44 pm

Hey guys, I'm new here. Just got my first ThinkPad and I really, really like it. I got it on eBay and just received it today. I am having a problem with it, though. It's running XP Professional. I don't think it's even upgraded to SP1 yet. I don't believe it's a legit copy of XP, so I intend on buying a new copy for it as soon as I can. But anyway, what's happening is....just about every time I try to install or uninstall something or watch a movie in Windows Media Player, I get the Blue Screen. The thing is, it doesn't stay up there long enough for me to read what all it says. I believe the error was "BAD_DATA_POOL" or something along those lines. After it blue screens, it doesn't want to start Windows back up, so I have to hard reset it and turn it back on again. After that, it boots up fine. I'm not sure what the problem is. Do you guys think it may a hardware issue?

I've been using Macs for a while now and have started to wanna switch back to Windows (don't hear that very often, eh?) I grew up using Windows and I miss being compatible with everything and just certain things about the usability of it. Plus, I've been wanting to buy Microsoft Flight Simulator. 8)

But anyway, I'd appreciate any help at all. Thanks in advance.

To prevent Windows to reboot when an error occurs, go to Control Planel -> Advanced -> click on Settings for "Startup and recovery" -> disable "Automatically restart". This will give you time to read the complete error message.

What I would do is go to Windows Update and update to Service Pack 2 first thing, any rollups after that, then the remaining security updates. Chances are that will fix your problem - unless it is in the hardware. If you can't choose "Custom" on Windows Update because your copy won't pass Authentication, then turn on Automatic Updates and leave your computer connected to the net overnight. Hopefully the updates will download.

Actually, before, or as soon as you go online, you should download and install a firewall such as Zone Alarm, Kerio, or some other one to give you some protection against the bad guys.

Thanks, guys.

I forgot to mention that when I tried to use Windows Update earlier, IE crashed. I'm on the ThinkPad right now, so I'm gonna try to update it again.

I went and turned off the automatically restart after a crash thing. It was in My Computer, instead of Control Panel.

I ran the scan disk earlier, too. I'm not sure if that helped anything or not. Gonna go try and update again. I'll report back later. Thanks again!

EDIT: Well, I tried to update through Windows Update again, but got a blue screen while it was installing Security Updates. I wrote down the error, but I don't know if it'll be of any help. It definitely doesn't make any sense to me.

Here's the error code: Stop: 0x00000024 (0x001902F8, 0xF61B6350, 0xF61B6050, 0x80571963)

I'm planning on going ahead and ordering an OEM copy of XP Home from newegg here in a couple of days, but I don't know if simply re-installing the OS will help, since this could be a hardware problem.

From the Aumha.org database

0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device drivers to the most current versions.
General Discussion {KB 228888} Win 2000, Win XP
Caused by Open Handles while closing an application {KB 195857} Win NT, Win 2000, Win XP

Also see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/228888/en-us

Most likely a wipe and reinstall will fix it unless there are physical problems with the disk.

What kind of machine is it? Some Thinkpads have a recovery partition.

It's a ThinkPad T20, 700MHz PIII, 256MB RAM, 20GB HD, DVD ROM.

Thanks for posting that, egibbs. I suspected a HD problem, but as you said, it could need a reinstall.

How do I access this recovery partition, if my ThinkPad has one? Thanks!

EDIT: Well, I decided to try Windows Update again and it downloaded a few updates fine, then I restarted and tried to install SP2. Got the BSOD again. Here are the error codes:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Stop: 0x0000000A (0x8195477, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x804EF020)

I have the same laptop as you, and I think it's great. Howver, I would suggest using windows 98SE, as it's less resource hungry. You might need XP for some things, but not for games at least (there are some games that need XP, but they won't run on the T20 anyway, as it's too slow).

When I upgraded my memory (from 128MB to 384MB, you should be fine with 256MB) a few days ago, I thought about reformatting and installing XP. I posted here at:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=20570

but the concensus, which I tended to agree with, was that XP wouldn't benefit me enough to compensate for the heavier resource drain of XP over 98SE. If you're using the laptop for business, then XP's stabler performance is more important to you than it's slower performance (plus with business software the speed is less important, especially since a word processor spends most of it's time idle, waiting for the user to make the next keypress), whereas for games, you need as much CPU runtime and free memory as possible. Plus with 98SE, you get DOS backwards compatibility, but not with XP.

By the way, there is one major (and very stupid) problem with the T20 that you should be aware of, or it could cost you dearly:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=7935

The CRC 0175 problem can aparently kill your motherboard (well, prevent it from ever booting up again). I've searched the WWW and the Yahoo! groups as well as this forum, but it seems like there's no way of preventing the bug, other than ensuring that you have a powered battery installed, as if the power totally goes when booting the T20 then the BIOS gets corrupted. If you boot from mains, and the mains power goes, then you need the working battery present for the T20 to fall back on.

I have no idea why the laptop needs to write to the BIOS during boot up, and regardless of that, when the laptop checks and find the CRC error, it should give you something like a:

"Press [F1] to rewrite BIOS with default settings" option", but instead you are locked out, and have to buy a new motherboard, just for one stupid BIOS corruption error. Ridiculous. If I'd have known about that, I migth well have not bothered buying a T20, and bought a different model or brand.

Anyway, apart from that, I have no complaints at all about the T20. It plays the games I like, it's great for reading text and viewing graphics, and it has a very good screen display (and thankfully works with an external mouse). I just wish it didn't have that STUPID, potentially fatal CRC problem.

I had an Ubuntu Linux CD laying around, so I decided to install that. I don't really like Linux, but I messed around with the ThinkPad running Linux a bit with no problems, so that leads me to believe that re-installing Windows would solve the BSOD problem. My question is: where can I find a Restore CD for the T20? I looked on eBay and couldn't find one. I'd rather get a Restore CD, instead of buying a full copy of Windows, since the Restore CD would come with all of the drivers for the T20, etc. Thanks in advance, guys. I appreciate all the help! 8)

Try posting in the For Sale/Want to Buy section for recovery CDs. There are several forum members that might be willing to send you copies for shipping costs...maybe even free, if you get lucky.

Also, you might want to include your Model/Type number in that listing as well, so that you get the right disks.

Cool. Thanks! By Model/Type Number, do you mean T20, or is there some other number that I should post?

By model and type he means 2434-tfu (just example) like the numbers in my signature, 2378-FZU. Definately put in the t20 part too.

It should be on the bottom of you machine on a small bar code sticker.
