New T43 2668-92U

#1 Post by Tungo » Fri Feb 17, 2006 6:59 pm

Hello,

I'm impressed with IBM/Lenovo. I ordered the T43 on 02/10, shipped from HK on 02/14 and I received on 02/16..that was good service and fast delivery! My T43 was built on 01/28/06. The 15" SXGA is great, very bright, not one dead/stuck pixels or bright spots. I am very happy.

The 2915ABG wireless works with my D-Link 524 via AC without a glitch! The fan is not too bad on this unit, I heard the HD more than the fan itself. I did intall the Fan Control, set at Smart Mode and it works great!

The keyboard is not as good as the one on the T22 but it not bad either! This one is ALPS China but I also read on other threads that the new NMB is now also made in China and is not as good as previous Thai NMB.

6ix days from HK, that's amazing.

I've held off on the "fan control" utilities but ... which one did you install? I'd like to see it in operation on mine.

I installed v0.1.8. The program worked as indicated. You may have to tweak the .ini to have the fan operates the way that you might refer.

tungo - did you receive a LG or ID Tech panel on your T43? it sounds like you've already done a parts lookup so I'm curious to know which one you have.

also, which hard drive is installed in your machine? the Hitachi 5K100 and 7K100 are among the loudest I've ever heard, so I'm assuming it's one of those. if it bothers you, I would recommend downloading the acoustic management tool at Hitachi's site. it makes a big difference in keeping the noise down with only a slight penalty in performance ( www.laptoplogic.com did a roundup of 11 drives and tested the 7K60 with acoustic mgmt enabled and disabled)

Hi Hoya,

The unit came with the LG panel. How is this one compare to the ID tech? The HD is a Toshiba MK8032GAX. It seems to run all the time but it does not loud likes some of the other that I have heard.

I have an 40 GB Hitachi Ultra Quite on my T22 and it more quite than this Toshiba!

Tungo -

here are some pics I took awhile back comparing an ID Tech to an LG FlexView:

Lenovo has discontinued using ID Tech panels on the T60 and it appears that LG is now the 'preferred' LCD vendor on the T4x series as well. overall, color reproduction is better on the LG, which you can see in the pictures.

Hoya,

Thanks for the pictures. It seems that the LG is a little brighter and the color is more vivid than the ID Tech. Which HD came with your machine? Does always running?

Hi Tungo,

Congratulations on your new T43 ... fast shipping!!!

I'm in the market for a new T43 as well ... have 2 T21s & 1 T22 currently ... time to move up.

Have tried doing a search on both Lenovo.com & Lenovo.ca for specs on the 2668-92U, but no luck ... just get the "support & downloads" pages.

Also, it seems that the 2668-92U, may have transformed itself into the 2668-9GI (reference on the Lenovo site that the 9GI is based on the 92U)

I'm confused ... would appreciate if you or any other kind member could help solve the mystery.

Thanks,

Frank

I've tried many hdd's, including the Toshiba you have, and have found the Fujitsu's to be the quietest (the 100gb 5400rpm model is also a nice performer), while the Hitachi 5K100 and 7K100 are among the loudest. I would consider the noise from the Toshiba MK8032GAX to be medium.

if you're looking for the best possible performance with low noise, the Seagate 7200.1 series is the way to go, and has a good chance of working with your T43 (most off-the-shelf hdd's have 'incompatible' firmware and therefore cause a 2010 error message immediately after hitting the power button).

Kellyreddog,

I just went to US Lenovo's website and the 2668-92U is still available on sale. I'm very happy with this unit, it's very fast. I loaded it up with VS. 2005, SQL 2005 and a whole punch of ather apps which took up to almost 1/2 of the HD capacity, and it only took 41 secs to boot...That's amazing!

Hoya,

Thanks for the info. The noise from the Toshiba HD is not that bad, I just wish that it could be better. It seems to me that laptop parts do have the same quality as in the past. The Hitachi that I bought 2 years ago did not have any noise at all when idle.

I liked and bought the Thinkpad because of its IBM innovative design, quality and looks...black!. I hope that lenovo is not going to mess up the Golden egg.

How specific do you want the specs? You can find some specific info on that model in the TABOOK.PDF. You can find a link to it in the forum FAQ.

Aside to Chris: thanks, I think I'd gone down the wrong path before and got confused. Played with tpfanctrl last night and this morning, and though the "noise" issue isn't much different (my T43's quiet as a mouse), I think i'm getting longer battery runtime with the fan on 0 50% more of the time.

Thanks Tungo,

Figgered out my error ... had my browser set to go to www.levono.ca by default  ('stead of US site)

The 92U is not available on Cdn site ... but a 9GI is ... seems to be identical ... would buy the 92U from the US, but would get killed with Cdn Customs/Duty, Courier Broker Fees and would definitely have the pleasure of paying 15% Cdn fed. & prov. sales taxes on the USD purchase price (plus Cdn $ is only worth .84 cents US today)

Thanks again for your help ...

Frank
