How to power on X22 when battery level is inaccurately '0%'?

#1 Post by aceo07 » Sat Feb 18, 2006 1:06 am

I want to be able to power on my laptop when the battery level is at 0%. It's NOT really at 0%, I can go for about 30-40minutes longer when it's 0%. Unfortunately, it will not let me power on if the laptop is powered off when it's at 0%.

This is a cheapo ebay battery, btw.

edit: If I use AC adapter, I can start the laptop. Then I can remove the AC adapter and it will still run. It's been running for at least 50minutes now on '0%' battery. :P

Simple...change the settings in battery maximizer wizard. Or go to Control Panel, power options, and turn off all the alarm settings. Then go into the BIOS and do the same.

What does Windows settings have to do with it? I choose to power down the computer, Windows didn't force me to. Also, Windows is not preventing me from powering up, it doesn't even access the drives or anything if I try to turn on the laptop at 0%.

Which BIOS settings are you referring to? I don't see anything in regards to battery. Just power usage management.

I second what Aristotle11 said.

Then power up your laptop with a/c with the battery attached. Next pull out the a/c cord and run the battery down until the laptop shuts off due to lack of juice. Lastly, recharge and deep cycle your battery one time following the directions in the battery section of the Thinkpad Configuration. After that your battery should report it's true power and you can return all the settings you changed to values fitting your needs. There is a slight chance that this process may cause your battery to not work at all (as claimed by a person or two who has scolded me for recommending this before), but I've done it dozens of times on all kinds of laptops without issue. I just have to post this "disclaimer" so lawyers don't show up at my door.

Good Luck,

That's the strange thing. The windows alerts are just text or beeps. I didn't set windows to shutdown, standby or hibernation.

I've been doing the full battery drain since I got the battery almost 2 weeks ago (at least 5times). At 0% I've always been able to drain it some more for about 30minutes. However, since it reports 0% the laptop won't even power up.

What's a deep charge? I've full drained and let it recharge overnight, about 7hours. Should it be longer?

I've been draining for battery for ~2:40hours. Cpu is going full load at 800mhz with folding@home with the screen on at normal 100% all of the time. There's also a pcmcia wireless card active. I'm not running any harddrive intensive applications. I don't want to risk any data lose.

At 2:25hours, the laptop gave 3 beeps. I don't think this is a Windows warning. It's been 0% for at least 30minutes.

After the laptop shuts down, I'll leave it off and recharge for the next 20hours.

It dropped a little under 2:40hours. I think the battery is wrong. It says its full capacity is 32Wh. However, if it's been going for 2.6hours at ~16-18Wh, then the full capacity should be 41Wh to 46Wh...

Maybe you just have a defective chip in the battery? I'd just use the battery as it is for as long as you can, but it might be a good idea to buy a spare right now for those times when you absoluety need to have reliable power for a measured time.
