Installshield apps not working
Installshield apps not working
Every app that uses installshield won't even load up. I double click setup.exe and nothing loads up. I see it in the taskbar and just usually kill it. I've erased temp files. Don't really know what else to do. Any suggestions?

Make sure Windows Installer service is running and starts automatically at startup.
Control Panel -> Adminstrative Tools -> Computer Management
Double click on Services and Adminstration in the right hand panel then double click on Services.
Look for the service "Windows Installer" and double click on it.
Change the "Start Up" type to Automatic and then click the "Start "button and OK.

I'm not sure if InstallShield and DemoShield are related but there is a known problem with certain versions of QuickTime and DemoShield.

Not sure if this will help, but it might be worth running the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility :

i'm definitely up to date on windows...when i go into the taskbar manager after double clicking the game setup it has wowexec.exe and setup.exe. when i kill them it shows "The request to end the selected 16 bit task has timed out. The Win 16 Subsystem may be unstable. Press OK to terminate the Win 16 Subsystem or Cancel to leave it running."
The "wowexec" etc. error message indicates the setup program probably needs to be run in compatability mode for some previous version of Windows.
Right click the setup file, select properties and under compatibility, set it to run for whatever version of windows it's designed for.

I used to be an anarchist but I quit because there were too many rules
This problem may be solved by moving the setup file to a location which does not use long names in its path components (e.g. the root of drive C) and running it from there (at least if the creation of short file names has been disabled).ajsimeon wrote:i'm definitely up to date on windows...when i go into the taskbar manager after double clicking the game setup it has wowexec.exe and setup.exe. when i kill them it shows "The request to end the selected 16 bit task has timed out. Sorry about that. I did a search for Windows Installer, and version 3.0 is what I found. I just looked at my setup, which I believe is up-to-date, and it shows I have version 3.1.ajsimeon wrote:Tried downloading the Windows Installer 3.0 Redistrubution but it said that mine is newer.
Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (3.1.4000.2435) is available
You can remove Windows Installer with Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel, but I am not sure if you would be able to install Installer afterwords.
You might try "System File Checker" first. Go to Start > Run and type "SFC /scannow" without quotes in the dialog box and hit the Enter key. You can get more information on "System File Checker" in Windows "Help and Support" off of the Start Menu.

I would try System File Checker next. Go to Start > Run, and type "SFC /scannow" in the text box and hit the Enter key.
If that doesn't work, it may be time to do a backup of your existing hard drive, then use the Product Recovery Disks to reinstall the Operating System and other factory software. WARNING: Use of these discs will erase all existing data and partitions off of your hard drive. After using the Product Recovery Discs, you can restore your data files from the backup that you just made previously. You will still have to update Windows, your antivirus and other software.

WOWEXEC is the Windows on Windows Executive. You can't "not run" it for older apps. It is there to provide support for non-32 bit apps. Frankly, if this setup program is requiring Wowexec, then I'd be suspicious that it runs on your OS at all.ajsimeon wrote:did that...set it to windows 95 and windows 98/Me and still wowexec. gosh i might have to do a fresh install...it's kinda buggin me. i'm just nervous that i might do it all for nothing and the same thing happens.
I think you're going down a rabbit hole with this System File Checker and such ... put the setup program in a folder off C:\ with < 8 characters (e.g. c:\gameinst\). If it won't install nicely, it's not meant to be. Zeus: Master of Olympus from Sierra? It apparently was spec'ed for Win98, ME, and 2000. Maybe they exaggerated?

If I am looking at the same program you are, PSpice 5.5 lists the following as compatible OS's. I see PSpice as a circuit board simulation program - is this correct?
Doing a search with Google on "PSpice 5.5" I come up with the following: PSPICE 5.5 Student Version
* DOS 6.22 και προηγούμενες εκδόσεις
* DR.DOS 6.0, OS/2 3.0 WARP
* WINDOWS 95,98 και προηγούμενες εκδόσεις
* NOVELL 3.12, 4.10
It would seem David Spalding is correct in that you are trying to install too old of program for XP.
EDIT: PSpice was up to product version 10.1 in November of 2003.

That version of pSPICE is too old, as GomJabbar and David Spalding have pointed out. Version 9.2 is runs fine, but I think you can't get demos from Cadence for it anymore except as part of the OrCAD lite demo CD.
