Recommended anti-virus software?

#1 Post by ambientscape » Sun Feb 19, 2006 7:15 pm

Dude,

I'm seeking opinion on the best anti-virus available that is efficient and not memmory hogging. Currently, I'm using Norton Internet security 2006 for my T23 and found it to be slowing down the performance of my system. Opinions and suggestion are appreciated.

For least system resources, BitDefender and TrendMicro PCcillin are the better options. Check this out:

BitDefender looks to be a better deal.

I'd go with NOD32 or Kaspersky, but again, it is what suits you. Ask 10 peeps and you will get 10 different answers.

Norton Internet Security  yes it does like to make it presence known

It's been mentioned here before and I use it on all my computers - Grisoft, AVG, free edition, that and a good spyware program is a great team.

If you want light on the resources go with AVG or Nod32. The rest are a little more CPU hungry but nothing like NAV.

In my experience NAV is ok... so long as it is the barebones corporate edition. That has never given me a lick of trouble :D SystemWorks on the other hand ate resources and asked for a second helping :?

Right now I'm using Corporate Edition 8.0.1.425.

NOD32 & Defender

#10 Post by wpwood3 » Sat Mar 11, 2006 12:44 am

I have used NOD32 on all of my Windows desktops, notebooks and servers for quite some time. It works great and uses minimal system resources. The scans are fast as well.

In addition, I use Windows Defender which was previously called
Microsoft Antispyware.

The combination of NOD32 and Defender is tough to beat.

A firewall (hardware or software) offers protection against certain types of threats, but does not protect against others. You still need antivirus software if you download e-mail with a virus attachment, or if you visit certain web pages of the shadier type. I recently got an virus alert from Norton while visiting a Windows software help site. This is while I had a software firewall running.

See following link for more info. http://www.faqs.org/faqs/firewalls-faq/

I use McAfee AV on all my systems and I'm pretty pleased with it. It isn't a resource hog, and it updates quietly and frequently.

I too have a T23 like the topic creator. Similar setup in many regards as well, same size external HD in fact! Amusing, that.

Anyhow, if you want to pay a bit, get NOD32. Before I used that, I swore to AVG Free Edition. It's a wonderful program, in my opinion. Can't go wrong with either.

I have been using Mcafee for the last 12 years and it does not let me try another one.

But if you're looking for freewares then AVG and AVAST are one of the best out there.

Ive always hated norton personally, ive had more problems with norton products then you can shake a stick at. Right now i use mcafee (because its free with my ISP) and its alright, better then norton anyways. Before i had macfee i was a big fan of Trend microcillian.
